Re: Wish list for the Helix 2

2014-06-03, 21:03 PM

Until it starts developing spots that are brighter in the random parts of the screen. Permanent spots. Seems to be a problem with a lot of panels these days, phones, laptops. Not sure why it happens, but dissapointing given the price of these devices.

Otherwise agree the screen on the Helix is one of its finer points.

Make sure to have thunderbolt 2.0.

Thunderbolt 2.0 can replace Mini Display port, USB 3.0 and eGPU possibility!

They will - but it won´t be announced until Fall as far as I have heard,  though it won´t be called Helix again.

The Core M CPUs are perfect for the new Helix, they will also allow it to be fanless.

If they go fanless though, wouldn't that mean much lower performance? Are there any fanless designs out there that could beat the sustained performance of the i5 in the Surface Pro 2 and 3?

Not to my knowledge. Sure, the performance should be lower - Core M CPUs are supposed to have a much lower TDP than the old Ivy-Bridge U CPUs still used in the Helix - but it also means more efficiency, longer battery lifes and, most important, much less heat. Because one of the big weak-points of the Helix is its thermal design - it is getting much too hot, even with the fans in the dock.

Having no fan in the tablet should also allow to make it thinner and lighter than before...

I agree that heat seemed to be a major complaint (at least on this forum), but MS pretty much solved that in the SP2 with good cooling and by going to Haswell. What I like is that they didn't give up any computing power to get there. I'm really curious which way Lenovo will go. It used to be that the X-series gave you power in a utalitarian package, and even the Helix did some of that by using some hardcore cooling in the hinge design. I hope they will offer professionals a hybrid that can compete with the SP3 at least in terms of performance. I guess we'll find out in half a year or so!

Agree. If the next "Helix" utilises those Core M processors, then it's unlikely a spiritual successor of the X-series Tablet or Helix lineage, which packs quite respectable performance in a small package.

Even if Lenovo goes with something like this (http://www.cnet.com/news/fanless-core-m-designs-get-fans-in-desktop-docks/), which is a desktop dock w/fans, a "30%" performance boost sounds unlikely to push a Y-series processor into the U-series performance realm.

Cheers.

Well, Y CPUs are not that slow - the fastest Y CPU nearly equals a Haswell i5U ( i7-4610Y is nearly as fast as the i5-4200U). Considering the better efficieny of the newer CPUs (more performance per MHz) and the two-generation gap between the Helix and its successor, even with Core M it could at least equal the performance of the Helix (CPU wise, GPU wise it should be  much faster).

But it is all speuclation, until Intel releases some serious tech-specs for the Core M CPUs and until Lenovo announces the Helix successor...

Are you positively sure that Core M includes the fastest Y-series processors? My impression thus far is that Core M will be the lower-end instead.

As much as I like it to happen, it's quite doubtful to me that Core M will be that fast, given that Intel just also announced the target prices of Core M systems, it's even more unlikely so.

Cheers.

As far as I understand the Intel announcement of the Core M CPUs, they will contain all new 10 W TDP Broadwell CPUs - the former Core i Y CPUs, i3, i5 and i7. There will be faster and slower versions of course.

You must be refering to this: http://www.engadget.com/2014/06/05/intel-core-m-devices-will-cost-as-little-as-599/ But 599 will be a low-end, entry-level system - there are also 599 € / $ notebooks available with i7 Quad-Core CPUs, the price does not necessary have to say much about the possible performance. Also, as far as I this understand, this pricepoint will be a Tablet only, without a laptop dock.
