X230 mSATA SSD

2012-11-07, 23:12 PM

Just got two new X230 laptops. Will this model take an mSATA SSD? Is the mSATA slot 6 Gbs or 3Gbs?

Any recommendations are appreciated.

yes it takes the mSATA in the WWAN mPCIe slot under the palmrest.

mSATA speed is 3Gbs.

@Lead - Thank you! I put a 256GB in my W520. Is the slot exactly the same on the X230 i.e. will it take a 256GB mSATA SSD, same size as the W520 etc.?

My reason for concern is, that when I went to the Crucial website, it does not show the X230 as being compatible with their mSATA SSD, although it works fine in the W520 - or so I'm told. I have an ADATA.

I find it odd that the mSATA slot is 3Gbs, because the chipset provides for 2 6Gbs, no? One is taken by the primary bay, so what happened to the other 6Gbs SATA?

your ultrabase's ultrabay takes the other 6 GB/s connection.

@lead - Thanks. I didn't know about the Ultrabase. I was using one of my existing mini-docks with the X. Perhaps I will pick one up.

while we are on this subject, i just installed Mushkin Atlas 120GB for boot drive. evrything is running fine except that the speed of the drive should be 550MB/s and i am getting only around 280~290 MB/s.
Can somebody confirm that PCIE slot is only SATA 2 capable

Hey there and welcome to the forums yodee!

Looking over at the PSRef and the cipset that came with the X230 it will support 6Gb/s if it is in the Primary Bay or an Ultrabase's Ultrabay. Like Jin Li had mentioned, SATA II/III are backwards compatible, so if you install in the mSATA where a WWAN would go, it will run at 3.0Gb/s.

I hope this helps!

I have an ADATA XPG SX300 installed as the boot drive for Win8 in an x220T. Though it is indeed limited to SATA II speeds (and this will be the case on an x230 as well), it's still fantastic and a huge step up from an HDD. I've had no problems with compatibility, BSODs, etc... firmware is 5.0.2a.
