X230T not shuttung down after BIOS, system and Windows Update

2014-10-30, 20:34 PM

Hi,

Yesterday, I saw on the Lenovo System Update app, that I had couple critical and optional updates. These were the updates:

WER Patch

Lenovo Comm Utility

Lenovo Power Management Driver

ThinkPad Power Manager

Intel WLAN Driver

BIOS 2.60.1.14

There were couple updates on the Windows Side.  I ran all of them in one session so I can't really say if windows messed up something or the System Update is responsible but since yesterday I can no longer shutdown my x230t i7 Win 7 Pro. I closes the desktop and then it gets to the screen where you'll see a spinning wheel and the words "Shutting Down":

But it will hang there forever and never actually shuts down. I have to press and hold down power button to shutdown.

Any ideas?

Ok.  I did a quick test, and I'm relieved to believe that this may not be a BIOS issue. I was really afraid that I had to send this in for servicing as BIOS failure generally require board change...

So what I did:

Removed the Power Manager Software - same behaviour

Removed Fingerprint Manager - same behaviour

Can't use any past restore point as I've disabled that feature as I have never needed it before. Now I know I have to at least create them manually.

So, I went and booted up in safe mode. And it shut down beautifully. This is leading me to think that it is a windows thing and not a BIOS issue.  So I'll got ahead and factory restore, it's gonna be a long night installing 3 yrs worth of updates - fun...

To any Lenovo staffer, kindly note that I found the culprit for this bahaviour, and I'd appreciate it if you can relay it to your technical people.

I had to do a full factory restore and made a full windows update. Shut down, no problem. So I knew the issue was not caused by a windows update.

I then proceeded to do a full Lenovo System Update, and the problem remerged. Just hagned here all night:

So I proceeded to uninstall, one by one, each of the updates Lenovo did. I found out that the new Lenovo Power Management Driver 1.67.09 caused the computer to just hang on shut down screen. Please pass the word.

Good morning. Thanks for the info. My X220T is doing the same thing after the Lenovo Updates. I am trying the version supplied by Windows Update, but I'm not sure which version it is.

*Edit*

So it looks like the PM Driver supplied by Windows Update / Lenovo is Version 1.67.4.5, and so far it seems to be okay, my X220T shut down with no issue.

Thanks for your issue report and I'm really sorry for this trouble.

We are investigating it urgently.

Well, the issue came back.

Now, it seems that it is related to either these two deviced in Device Manager:

Intel (R) 82579LM Gibabit Network Adapter - Driver 12.10.29

Lenovo PM Device (under system devices)

I had the Intel (R) driver 12.10.29 disabled as I don't need ethernet adapter. But as soon as I enabled it, the issue came back where I get stuck on "Shutting Down" window.

Now, disabling it, doesn't help either. Even after disabling I can't shut down or restart...

I'm definitely not doing what I did last night again. I stayed up all night trying to figure out what was the issue.

Also note that when I disable the Intel (R) 82579 driver, I also loose functionality with the Fn key. I cannot bring up the Network Manager with Fn+F5 or Camera with Fn+F6. And I also loose Lenovo Tablet Control Unitlity. the tablet no longer autorotates or Secondary Landscape is enabled when swivling the screen.

If you restore back to Power Management Driver 1.67.4.5, is there a problem?

where do I find that driver? Couldn't find it here:
http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-tablet-laptops/thinkpad-x230-tablet

Or should I just uninstall the current drive attached to the Lenovo PM Device? I noticed that although I uninstalled the driver from "Program and Features", I see that this Device still shows the 1.67.09, and somehow it installed on it's own.

When you uninstall the PM Device, check the 'Delete Driver' box, then run Windows Update to see if it's there.

Actually, as soon as I uninstalled the driver for the Device (from within Device Manager. Windows automatically installs the 1.67.4.5 version.

So far so good. I can also enable the Intel (R) Network Adapter, and it seems that I can reboot and shut down with no problems
