X230T stiff hinge, can it damage the screen from stress?

2012-07-21, 4:20 AM

I just got my X230T couple days ago, and have been evaluating it. The performance and upgradeability is very good, but I find the build quality poor. Seriously, a dummy cover on the fingerprint slot?

I found a major concern and want to ask people if you guys have the same thing.

The hinge is very stiff (to be clear, it feels "solid stiff" and not "insanely stiff"), and when I change to tablet mode, the glass that covers the screen shows as if is getting a lot of pressure and it shows some bumps on the bottom edge of the screen. (EDIT: Actually it shows that bump even in laptop mode.) It kind of looks like when you put electric tape to cover couple of uneven surfaces together. It doesn't effect visibility of the LCD or colors, but I'm just worried that one day the glass might crack from there. There are actually two spots along that bottom edge, but picture only shows one right above the hinge.

Please see the photo, and tell me do anyone of your X230T has this?

This picture just shows the screen is raised a little bit on upper left corner.

You may want to take it in to a local warranty service provider and have them take a look at it.  There are two in the Portland area:

Is the poor digitizer performance covered under warranty as well or is that just how it was designed?

Hi hp_79

I would not worry about it, mine has some kindda like that too, might be a little different but probably from the same design.

Cheers,

As for the messy looking parts on my lower part of the screen, I will be comparing it with a brand new replacement. Lenovo is sending me a replacement because the three feet standing problem. I saw my buddy's X220T, and it doesn't have this problem so I requested a replacement.

Edit: never mind about starting a new thread for digitizer accuracy. It's already there. LOL.

The messy stuff under the screen isn't from the stress on the hinge. It's actually from bad manufacturing. I got two new X230Ts, one had much less visible mess on the screen, and the other was barely noticeable. I know someone with a X220T, and I can see absolutely no messy stuff under the screen.

This messy stuff under the screen also might have been from the warped screen lid. I have already returned it, so it's all good now.

I have the same 'bump' on my x220t but never really thought anything of it. Is it a valid excuse to file a warranty claim?

I have no idea. I know a lot of these tablets have these bumps or mess, but it's not really that noticeable and doesn't effect anything besides aesthetics.

Here's how my new X230T looks like. I'm satisfied with mine.

I have a oversized (13.1") glossy screen protector on mine.
