X61 Tablet, wifi cuts out intermittently

2009-01-26, 23:16 PM

Hey folks. I have an X61 Tablet, 7764-CTO. It has an Intel 4965ag (or agn?) wifi card in it.

The problem is that now and again, the wireless just simply stops responding. In Vista, it makes it unable to open Network Connection, or the Network & Sharing Center. No wireless access points are seen at all.

Cycling the wireless kill switch doesn't fix it.

After such a failure occurs, when I go down to reboot, windows takes ~20 minutes to reboot on it's own.

I'm using the latest Intel 4965 driver from their website.

Out in the world, this will happen every hour or so.

In certain places, it will happen every 5 minutes (reliably).

In Linux (Kubuntu 8.10), I get the same regular failures, but if I rmmod the iwlagn module, and reload it, it WILL work again.

Is my wifi card dead? It seems like an annoyingly large job to replace it! Argh! I wish I had warranty :(
