X61 tablet bezel separation - FIXED

2007-11-27, 15:14 PM

Earlier this year, some of our customers noticed that the plastic trim bezel began separating from the LCD on some models of the X61 tablet and began discussing it in forums here, and subsequently refined the issue a bit more in this thread here, and this one here. Some of our customers shared their observations through comments here on Lenovoblogs, and engadget's coverage of the story broadened awareness still further.

As we investigated the underlying cause of the issue that affected a minority of the X61 tablets, we advised the community to seek service if they experienced the bezel separation and found the issue distracting.  We also advised that existing repair parts of that time might not provide a permanent fix in all cases, and our engineering teams were working toward that goal.   We appreciated the patience and help provided by those that documented their experiences, and in some cases, shared their systems with us for analysis. Thank you.

We have released a fix in the form of a revised bezel, with thicker adhesive tape designed to compensate for the somewhat thinner SXGA+ display.  These parts are now in stock, and are being applied through normal service routes.  Additional information including service part numbers may be found here.

Customers who have an X61t system with a separating bezel should seek service at this time through all normal channels including depot, onsite, or through business partners depending upon the warranty terms available for their system.

Thank you once again for your helpful thoughts and support as we worked this issue to resolution.

AndyP, Nonny,

Yes, this can be communicated, notably that stock is available and that customers may want to check out the tip linked to on the e-support site.

Hi There,

This includes countries like Singapore and Malaysia? Did Lenovo already announced to all Service centers worldwide?

The updated parts are supposed to be available on a WW basis.    If someone here encounters a situation in which their servicer is not aware of the revised parts, simply point them to the tip doccument here

If the revised parts are not available in your location, or there is a problem with the repair, please let us know.

Thanks.

It seems the part is not in stock here in the US either.  I just sent mine in last week and the support site says waiting for part today.  It gives no time frame to when the part will be in stock.  I was hoping that it would be a quick fix.

support site message:

HP 01/07/2008 09:33:00 M Hold for Parts - Service call is on hold until parts arrive, estimated at: None provided

Same here in germany. I've got a customer clicking his heels waiting. At least he has an on-site and after the guy turned up with the wrong part he can still use his tablet untill they get the right one.

Re: X61 tablet bezel separation - FIXED

2008-01-07, 21:23 PM
I have both the old bezel and the new bezel fresh out of the box sitting next to me. I had a nice little writeup but my machine decided it had other things to do...

Anyways, the gist of it is that the plastic is EXACTLY the same as the old bezel. In fact, the new, revised bezel still carries with it the old part number on a separate sticker. The tape around the sides and the top is exactly the same. The tape on the bottom is roughly twice as thick as the previous tape (although its still pretty thin-- think of the old tape as two sheets of paper and the new one as four in terms of thickness).

I'm a little disappointed that after all this time all we got was a little bit thicker tape that has questionable results (see tabletpcreview.com forums). I'm not an engineer, but it seems strange to me that on my last laptop (a dell), the bezel was firmly planted on the screen, yet it had no tape. This machine's bezel is practically glued on (yeah, I see the screws, but try taking the bezel off--- it's nearly impossible).

I'm withholding final judgement until I have the bezel installed tomorrow, but I'm skeptical. Tomorrow will be my fourth visit by a tech due to screen problems (horizontal lines, faded colors), the LCD bezel issue, a keyboard bezel that the tech cracked, the latch thing keeps coming out (this will be my second latch), not to mention the habit of them sending me wrong parts. I just want my machine to work and act like the $2000+ I paid for it-- that way Lenovo can keep my money and we can leave each other alone. Oh well.

I also have pictures if anyone wants me to upload them at some point.

There has been a short term outage of the bezel with the fingerprint scanner 42W3399.   The parts team is aware and working to get parts back in stock for the depot, and for onsite route.

Avalanche,

Sorry to hear that you've experienced the screen  troubles with your system.
