external dual monitor with thinkpad x61 tablet?

2007-12-27, 9:08 AM
Dear,

I am considering purchasing thinkpad x61 tablet soon. I may use the tablet notebook as my main office computer with external keyboard and things like that. Here is my urgent question. If I have a ThinkPad X6 Tablet UltraBase, can I possibly connect the tablet notebook to two external monitors (not one external monitor, what i mean is two monitors)? I have absolutely no idea about it, and waiting for some guru's tips.

Happy Holidays~~!!!

To use 2 external monitors on your X61, you will need to install an extra graphics card. Neither the X61 nor its dock will let you do that. A rather expensive solution (and probably the only one), would be to install a PC Cardbus adapter with a housing for such a card. Prices here and more info here.

Another possible solution is the VTBook

I am trying to figure this out as well - as I have a second LCD sitting on my office floor!

Can you potentially use the VGA port on the laptop itself? Or does the ultrabase disable that?

Thanks!

You can use the VGA port for an external monitor, and use either or both at the same time.

Great! Can you give me some tips on this? I have my main LCD plugged into the rear of the ultrabase - and I'm trying to connect my second LCD into the VGA port on the laptop itself. I cannot seem to figure out how to make them both work (extended display) using the presentation director.

That won't work. The ultrabase-port takes over from the laptop-port when the laptop is plugged in.
You can work only with the internal LCD and ONE external monitor, plugged in either in the laptop itself OR in the ultrabase, NOT in both.

I can confirm that 100%, played about with a tablet, dock and two screens today.

BUT, there is hope for you yet! Have a look at this Matrox DualHead2Go that should do the trick.
