"Rollcage" feature makes substantial diference?

2011-12-16, 18:07 PM

So...

I was almost right about purchasing a x220t until I stumble with the absence of the rollcage feature. Since I discovered Lenovo Thinkpad series thanks to the x220 (non tablet), I assumed the whole thinkpad series turned like a basic feature.

I´m aware this feature have no purpose to average city people... but I´m clumsy. Not often, of course. But sometimes, accidentes happens (example: one day, I was taking my PS3 inside another backpack to my girlfriend house and it fell off my lap.. the corner landed horribly on the metal ground with a loud noise. Still working, thank God... but who knows the next time...? My clumsiness has A LOT of story to tell about falling things... and I´m aways learning to be more and more carefull each time... yet again... who knows the next time...?). I like to have my sling-pack aways with me and planing the same with a x220t... well, this is not an hardcase sling-pack (yes, I plan to buy the x220t sleeve too) and not planing to buy new backpacks for now so...

The x220t it´s just sturdier as the x220 with rollcage feature...?

Falling on the ground (from the hands of a 5.9ft tall guy) will be a serious problem? (just an average, regardless the way it would fall)

x220 non-tablet it´s the only able to survive in my hands?

My many thanks for your attention

PS: I work with 3D modeling but one of my favorite hobbies are drawing, so, thats why I´m so compelled to purchase the tablet convertible version.

if you are asking if it has the rollcage it does
Next-generation ThinkPad roll-cage technology
Magnesium-alloy top and bottom covers
Optional solid state drives with no moving parts
Spill-resistant keyboard
Reliable, sturdy metal hinge construction designed for daily use, with one-directional hinge rotation

I understand the confusion.

This Lenovo comparison chart clearly says tablet models don't have a roll-cage:

The user "kvirtanen" (just below your post) explained...

What I´m afraid is that Lenovo changed the material type to low the manufacturing costs or something like... I don´t see them specify it at the comparison chart neither the customizable shopping options (even on the tag links).

On your link it might be outdated... so, thats why I´m confused.

Thanks. Well... any clues...? You have an x220t with some traumatic experience?

Not yet I'm afraid :)

My X220T arrives next week. I've had a X201T though and I've heard the X220T is sturdier, but I would definitely not want to drop it on a hard surface. Especially with the screen in open position, because of the 1-way-rotating hinge. If you really, genuinely are concerned about dropping your laptop, I advice you to take a look at Panasonic who make their toughbook models in tablet variations too. But, even there, their non-tablet variations are more protected against beating.

Look at the X Tablet part about ROLLCAGE. It says there that it´s not available. And that was recently updated. Your link/image wasn´t updated for some time.

GMAC-R60:

Jesse B Andersen is a considerably popular laptop reviewer and if u search "Lenovo X220 Tablet - Rotation + Latch" on Youtube u gonna find at the comment section:

@EL90291 Yep. I might be wrong but I think they usually send the systems with roll cages. (FYI the X220T doesn't have a roll cage).
