Problem installing Windows 10 for USB-C Firmware Update Thinkpad X390

2020-01-25, 13:10 PM

Hello,

since it is highly recommended to do the firmware update for the ThinkPad X390, I wanted to install Windows 10 on my device to do the firmware update. I am usually running Ubuntu on my device and everything works fine.

Unfortunately you cannot to the firmware update on ubuntu, so I downloaded the Windows 10 ISO and put it on an USB Stick.

It boots into the setup, but a few clicks into the setup it reports, that drivers are missing.

I tried it with 2 USB-Sticks (8GB Transcend & 64GB Sandisk).

I tried downloading and extracting the drivers on another USB-Stick but nothing seems to work.

Is there anything I am missing?

Normally its easy for me to switch between linux and ubuntu installations.

I used the following documentation for my approach:

https://gzhls.at/blob/ldb/f/1/d/5/cbf3f85748fe2aaf8e670886569226d50885.pdf

Kind Regards
Moritz

Hi moritzkn!

Welcome to our forums community.

You can follow the steps here: https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/faqs/windows-faqs/how-to-reinstall-windows-10/ to reinstall Windows 10.
You can create a BIOS update utility for Linux and you can refer to this: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n2jul22w.txt. You can download it here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x390/downloads/driver-list/component?name=BIOS%2FUEFI. Hope it helps.
