What is the new Adaptive Keyboard on the new X1 Carbon about? I heard about this feature.
The Adaptive Keyboard on the 2014 edition of the X1 Carbon is an intuitive feature that reduces keyboard clutter.
The Adaptive Keyboard displays different symbols depending on the usage of the system, and is application dependent. There are four different sets of combinations, namely
- Function: the standard F1 - F12 functions
- Web Conference: conference set with microphone, sound and video controls
- Web Browser: a web browser set for use with surfing the interweb
- Home: A system control set
The keyboard also only lights up when it detects user activity on the system.

These adaptive KB can be very problematic and many users are experiening issues with wifi connectivity etc. This is a step in the wrong direction. Better to use the hard button function keys. Easier to use, understand and highly reliable. Unfortunately, this is probably the biggest reason to steer clear of the carbon. The adaptive KB is not well liked by those who have purchased this device. Just another mistake in the disign disasters that have plaqued Lenovo this year.
It's yet another attempt at fixing what's broken when they left the 7-row keyboard.
