Windows 8.1 Helix external Drives are not assigned a drive letter.

Hello,

I have multiple hard drives which have worked on my computer before. Now that I have windows 8.1 external drives are not assigned a drive letter. They show in disk management as online and I can assign them a drive letter so that I can use them. However, it is kind of anoying to have to assign every drive I plug in a letter every time it is plugged in. Is there a windows setting that I am missing? Is anyone else experiencing this? I believe it is a software issue because I coppied the hard drive image to another computer (identical specs) and the issue is now on the other computer.

Things I have checked:

Power savings settings for hard drives.

drivers for USB, SATA, and Chipset

Thanks,

Spencer

Re: Windows 8.1 Helix external Drives are not assigned a drive letter.

Hi Spencer,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I’m really sorry to hear that when you plug external drives in your Lenovo system, they are not assigned a drive letter.

I would suggest you to open Command prompt in administrator mode and enter the following commands.

  • diskpart
  • automount enable

This will enable the automatic mounting of drives.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,

Mithun.

I ended up doing a factory reset back to windows 8. Thank you for your suggestion though!
