X201 Microphone - Quality and Noise Reduction

2011-08-10, 15:51 PM

Hi there. I was wondering if anyone has been able to make reasonable use of the microphones on the X201 tablet. I'm not sure if I am misconfiguring them or if they are just plain poor quality, but the microphones seem to be horrendous. When I turn off noise cancellation and echo cancellation, there is a significant hum and crackle in the background. When I turn on noise cancellation, it is completely impossible for the microphones to be used to record or transmit any intelligible voice, even if I yell.

In short, the microphones are almost useless for Skype and similar applications, and of course completely useless for any sort of speech recognition.

Has anyone had any luck in perhaps tweaking some special configuration settings that I am not aware of? On the other hand, if the microphones are just basically bad, does anyone have any recommendations for a supplemental headset microphone (preferably wireless/bluetooth)?

hey dm09,

try uninstalling the audio drivers for your unit.

let windows install its generic drivers and test again.

did it make any difference?

do note that the audio driver version for the X201 is at 3.66.147.0/4.95.48.50 . if yours is not at this version do update it to this.

at the same time, do a full system update of your unit.

Thanks very much. I uninstalled all the audio drivers and used the standard MS drivers. There was some improvement, but not that much. Oh well.

I have the x201 and the microphone isn´t the best, but I don´t have the problems you are mentioning. They do work really well in terms of people can hear and understand what I´m saying. I would use the warranty if it´s still aviable.
