Hi
What is the maximum amount of memory that a X220 can have ?
On the official site it says 8GB, but ThinkVantage say 16Gb
Thanks in advance
Kind regards
Steen

Hi and welcome,
my earlier "X200s" could handle 8 GB max... (official 4 GB)
the newer model X220 with new cpu/bridge could handle 16 GB ...
2 x 8 GB memory no problem...

Where did you find this on ThinkVantage? I can't find anywhere that says that 8 GB Sodimms can be used in the x220 (I have the 4296-2yu). I found places where people were complaining about it not working, but nowhere that said it would work.

If someone could respond to this it would be great as I want to order some memory soon. If we could get an official word from someone at Lenovo, that would be even better.
Thank you.

I can confirm that the x220t can handle 16gb of Ram as I have one with it. I'm using corsair value ram. Got it on sale from Newegg. Works really well, and has the same timings as the samsung ram that came with mine. (8gb factory) Flawless and really helps keep things smooth with tons of stuff open (mainly a bunch of VMs, etc.)

Thank you both very much. Funny, that is the same ram I was looking at on NewEgg. I do have to say that, so far, I really like this machine. I ordered it with 4GB of ram, since it was much cheaper for me to upgrade the ram than to buy it that way. Second I got it with the magnetic hard drive and figured I could buy an SSD if I wanted it. I know a lot more about enterprise storage than I know about the storage on notebooks, as I used to be a subject matter expert for EMC corp, but I was thinking that I could buy the smaller mSATA SSD and just put the OS, Programs, and swap there while having data, etc continuing to be on the much larger magnetic drive, but not sure how that might work vs regular SATA SSD with everything on it. I also run several VMs. In addition to several other VMs, I always use a VM for web browsing and keep a backup copy of the vhd on the machine as well. That way, when it becomes infected (as it inevitably will), I can just delete that vhd and copy the original vhd back over and boom, infection gone.
Anyway, thank you both again.

I use the intel 80gb msata ssd in conjunction with the 320gb 7.2k rpm hdd that came with it. As you said, I use the ssd for system files, and the hdd as storage and to house vm files. It works great. I've been thinking about possibly going dual SSD as the prices are getting much more reasonable, especially on sales. We'll see. The 7.2k hdd is a very good one, and the storage space is great.
