X230 Tablet Windows 8 Pen Handwriting software

Hello,
I go the Lenovo X230 Tablet and it came with Windows 7 pre-installed and everything was working great. Then after installing Windows 8 Pro on the Tablet, everything works great except that the pen handwriting software is not there anymore. I can use the pen to move around with no issues. I can open, close and right click with the pen, but cannot use it to write. I installed the needed drivers for the pen and installed ThinkVantage update software from Lenovo support site and ran the update to get the latest drivers and software but no luck. I can calibrate the pen with no issue.
Any ideas where I can get the handwriting software for it.?

Thanks

Re: X230 Tablet Windows 8 Pen Handwriting software

Hi, hmandi01

In Windows 8, writing-to-text transcription is normally a "keyboard," if you will, that you have to select. When you are on the desktop of your machine, is there a keyboard icon on the taskbar? If this is not visible in laptop mode, then see if it is there in tablet mode. If that icon is visible, click on it. This should bring up the touch keyboard. On this keyboard, the bottom-right key should be another keyboard icon. Select this icon and then select the pen option (third option.) This should change the touch keyboard into a transcription keyboard.

Best of luck. Let me know how it goes.

Adam

Re: X230 Tablet Windows 8 Pen Handwriting software

This was disconcerting for me too. Gone is the Tablet Input Panel that used to appear when you hovered the stylus over any text input box. Now it is always docked to the bottom of the screen and only appears when the keyboard icon is tapped. Even then it isn't immediately obvious that handwriting input can be possible until the keyboard icon at the bottom RHS of the keyboard is tapped. Then a menu of additional icons appears and then you tap the middle one, the one with the stylized tablet and stylus. The "new" tablet input panel appears and you can start writing. On the whole HWR accuracy is better and I like the new gestures for editing and correcting text. HTH

Thanks Admin for the reply. That helped. But I still wish it's like Windows 7, that you can drag the text box I guess from the left side of the screen. For example if you open MS Word and any text document writing software, the transcription keyboard should come up automatically. Thanks again.

the handwriting recongition works in windows 8. You just have to click the button in lower right corner of the virtuatal keyboard.

Re: X230 Tablet Windows 8 Pen Handwriting software

The latest Windows appears to be a marker for the end of cursive writing.

I am a writer. I used the original Motion tablet and then the Lenovo x60t for their ability to convert cursive into text in Word.

My x60t is 7 years old and puffing along. So I upgraded to the x230t.

I anticipated that Windows 8 would advance handwriting recognition.

Not so.

Windows 8 is geared to texting.

The use of cursive appears to be considerably less efficient in the new Windows 8.

It may not be possible to use cursive for essays in the current Windows version.

The new Windows leaves out individuals who grew up writing in cursive.

Someone(s) made a decision to downgrade cursive in the rollout of the current system, that it was not a priority. Otherwise the handwriting system would have advanced in the new Windows 8.

Frustrating.

Shame on us.

I suppose YMMV depending on the legibility of your handwriting from the machine's perspective.  I'm using cursive writing on an X60T with Win8 and getting good results.  I'm finding using only two lines at a time frustrating though.
Computers aren't the only ones who might be finding cursive HWR problematic.  My new accounting clerks can't read my handwriting either and mine looks like this:

Could get worse with more schools dropping cursive handwriting from their curricula.

Do you prefer using stylus for getting digital characters against keyboard? Why?
