X230 Tablet weird power issue

Hi all, This laptop is giving me nightmares at this point. I can't afford a new one at this moment so i come here for input. The issue I am having right now besides the known audio failure is with the power management, spedificaly the throttling that happens while it is on AC. To me, it seems that the Speedstep roles are reversed. It runs on full turbo speed, over 3ghz on battery but it clocks down to 1198mhz according to CPU-Z when it is plugged in. No combination of settings either in the BIOS, Power manager or the Windows power options have any effect, everything is at 100%. The battery is installed at all time and I have tried both 65 watt and 90 watt AC adapters which are both new. BIOS is updated and I have tried both Win 7 and 10, fully updated with a fresh install with newest drivers and programs and numerous BIOS resets with CMOS battery removed. I am suspecting the power jack at this moment but Power manager reports both AC adapters correctly.

I appreciate any response if anybody else has faced this issue or anything like it.

Re: X230 Tablet weird power issue

It might be running hot.  It will also throttle down if the CPU gets above a certain temperature.  You can install something like TPFanControl (free) to check.  If it is running hot, clean and reseat the fan with new thermal grease.

Re: X230 Tablet weird power issue

I forgot to mention that the temps where fine, i repasted the machine and cleaned the air path and it had no effect on the CPU clocking issue..

Re: X230 Tablet weird power issue

Try using ThrottleStop, and unchecking BD PROCHOT. Remember to click "Turn On" too.

Re: X230 Tablet weird power issue

Seems like that somewhat works. I assume the motherboard is defective then unless there is someway to make it ignore the 'BD PROCHOT' signal. Thanks for all your suggestions!

Re: X230 Tablet weird power issue

Could just be some BIOS oddity. You could also just configure ThrottleStop to run in the background.
