X61T XP -> screen blank on rotation to tablet mode

ISSUE:

screen goes dark/blank upon rotation to tablet mode

screen dark/blank when stated in tablet mode

IN GENERAL:

when running in laptop mode -> attempt to rotate to tablet mode -> screen goes dark/blank once the screen is approximately 6"s from the point at which it would lock in place in tablet mode

it does not matter where the hinge is within the 180 deg rotation, i.e.,  from laptop to tablet position

the problem occured sporadically, it is now virtually 100%

THE HELP WE ARE ASKING FOR:

1- means for determining whether the issue is hardware related or software related, troubleshooting & resolution

[some threads unrelated to this issue have eluded to a physical switch within the hinge, while others have suggested software related issues related to screen orentation]

We appreciate your help,

swrdfsh

the machine at issue is:

X61T, 7764CTO, factory Win XP tablet

Re: X61T XP -> screen blank on rotation to tablet mode

Since there have not been postings on drivers/settings related to blank screen and rotation, I would assume it is hardware related and deserves a visit to a service center.   The service center will fix the problem either way.   The software related to the screen rotation normally changes the screen only after full rotation and as you start to lower the lid from laptop to tablet.   If your screen goes blank (instead of rotating) as you lower the lid, it is possibly related to software.   Might also check your presentation mode and screen settings under the Tablet Shortcut Menu, if you have changed any of these setting from their default.

Re: X61T XP -> screen blank on rotation to tablet mode

As ctoys said, I would call the help desk and have it sent in.  The sensor for tablet mode is on the inverter card, which is under the front bezel.

I cannot think of a Lenovo driver that would cause this, but you could make sure that BIOS, tablet button driver, on screen display, video driver and presentation director (if you use it) are all the current version.

Re: X61T XP -> screen blank on rotation to tablet mode

ctoys,

Thanks for the comments and quick response.

The software that manages orientation seems to be functioning.

The settings within Presentation Mode and the screen settings under the Tablet Shortcut Menu have been in place for a long time.

(The points above may help in narrowing the field of possibilities... the issue appears to be triggered by mechanical rotation apart from the orientation software... then again, we do see updates to ThinkVantage software... so anything is possible!)

Soap,

Thanks for the comments and quick response.

We checked the "ThinkPad X60 Tablet and X61 Table Hardware Maintenance Manual, June 2007, file name = 42x3551.pdf" to gain a better understanding of the inverter and 42x3551.pdf sensor you mentioned.

The 'inverter' is mentioned but we don't find reference to a 'sensor for table mode', nor did we find a description of their function.

Would you share your understanding of what the 'inverter card' does... we suspect the 'sensor' is self explanatory?

We appreciate the help from both of you.

Re: X61T XP -> screen blank on rotation to tablet mode

Well, at the basic level the inverter card converts voltage.  the inverter card also has the icon plate lights built into it and the tablet buttons on the LCD.  The inverter card also has a sensor built in to it that detects when the tablet is in tablet mode and sends a signal to rotate the screen.  After re-reading your issue, it could also be possible that the video cables are getting pulled when you lower the screen.  Either way, you should send it in to be repaired.

I hope that helps!
