x230T fan goes crazy

Hello Everyone,

I recently dropped my x230T in my bag and although it and the hard drive was fine, I have noticed the fan goes to full speed whenever I boot the laptop or do anything, regardless of usage. The only thing that can calm it down is lenovo power manager when it boots in Windows but only barely. Any slightly cpu intesive task, the fan goes back to full speed. Any other OS, such as linux Mint, the fan will continue at full speed.  Has anyone encountered this issue before or has any advice on how to further diagnose the issue?

Kindly Appreciated,

Adam

Welcome to the forum!

Can you monitor the CPU temps when the fan is at full speed and post the results here?

Re: x230T fan goes crazy

After boot up with the fan at full speed, the cpu temp sits around 43°C - 45°C.

Re: x230T fan goes crazy

Such temps are not reason for the fan to spin on full throttle...  :-(

Difficult to know after such a crash what type of damage your X230 Tablet took. Maybe take a look at the BIOS settings under Config/Power and see if you have a similar settings this printscreen:

Re: x230T fan goes crazy

My BIOS settings were the same. I reset them to default anyway and changed the power settings to be the same and there's no difference.

The interesting thing is I'm not sure if the microcontroller for the fan is broken. Power Manager and TP Fan Controller can communicate with it to slow it down. However on boot, in Linux or under higher cpu load, its on full.
