Clean install, power management not working

2020-11-20, 0:16 AM

For me to use the X1 Fold in my corporate environment, the device needs to be reimaged with Windows Enterprise. I did test the device with the OS coming out of the box and everything was working fine.

Now back to reinstalling. The installation went smoothly (we flash 20H2/2004) and the device booted simply fine. Obviously, a lot of things didn't work (as expected) so I went ahead and installed the drivers from the Lenovo support page.

Everything is working (WiFi, Bluetooth, Lenovo Screen Switcher, the Lenovo Slim Keyboard, etc) but the power management. For some reason, the battery icon is showing a red cross like there isn't any battery. So of course, as soon as disconnect the USB power cable the machine turns off. Globally everything is super unstable because of that. The machine is awfully slow (comparing to the OS coming out of the box). In the device manager everything is working.

Anybody successful at starting a clean installation and having the power management drivers working as expected?

I also noticed that the screen refresh is not behaving correctly, seeing some weirdness especially when scrolling.

I installed 20H2, but it was the Pro version and it was done as an upgrade.  Did you get the latest BIOS before the install?  I'm not sure how you will be able to do the updates without the battery showing up.

Did you do an image backup before you began?

Ok, so I reinstalled a vanilla Windows 20H2 from Microsoft (nothing special from my IT department) and I can see the same problem. The battery isn't recognized at all. Clearly Lenovo did not try their drivers from a clean installation.

Hi,

Ok I'm suspecting something with the battery hardware now. I just restored the device using the recovery media from Lenovo and I'm seeing the same issue. It doesn't matter whether I use the charger from the box or any other type C charger.

I'll reach out the support to get a replacement or someone to look at it.

Thanks.

It sounds like hardware but the timing is suspicious
