How to enable additional power schemes in powercfg?

Hello,

I want to use the powercfg utility to select power plan e.g. balanced, best performance, best power efficiency.

This is the output I get from powercfg /list :

Existing Power Schemes (* Active)
-----------------------------------
Power Scheme GUID: 381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260df2e  (Balanced) *

However, on the Settings > Power & battery app, I can see more power schemes:

Why can't I see more power schemes from the powercfg utility? How do I show the other 2 power plans i.e. Best power efficiency and Best performance?

This forum posts suggests that the manufacturer may have overridden the settings:

Re:How to enable additional power schemes in powercfg?

So far Microsoft has not provided a way to switch power modes from the command line. The closest I can think of is to pop the Settings dialog with your script by going to the URL ms-settings:powersleep.

Hope this helps!

How to enable additional power schemes in powercfg?

Re:How to enable additional power schemes in powercfg?

Hello momoks.

Can you run CMD with admin rights then type in powercfg –restoredefaultschemes then press the enter key. After pressing the enter key it will go to a new line, you have just reset the power settings on your computer. Restart when necessary.

We are glad to help locate the answers.

Hi Hassen, Was there a typo in the command you asked me to type? I typed: powercfg –restoredefaultschemes and it gave the following error: Invalid Parameters -- try "/?" for help

From the info you provided you are running Windows with Modern Standby (the default). In Modern Standby there is only one power scheme/plan (Balanced), and you have the choice of running in one of three power modes (Best power efficiency, Balanced, or Best performance). What are you trying to achieve?

Re:How to enable additional power schemes in powercfg?

@bananaman  I would like to easily switch between the "Best power efficiency" and "Balanced" mode because on "Balanced" power mode generates too much heat and fan noise even for "simple" task like watching videos. When I code, "Best power efficiency" is laggy so I don't mind switching back to "Balanced".

I was thinking of writing a script that will toggle between "Balanced" and "Best power efficiency" using the powercfg utility. I find this more convenient that having to open the Settings app and navigating to the correct setting every time I want to change power modes.

Do you have suggestions for I can achieve this?
