X1 Fold wont boot

2021-10-07, 15:48 PM

My X1 fold wouldn't boot after coming back from sleep (Power button LED flashing 3 times, no boot)
Its done this many times before but usually after holding down the power button to reboot it would be fine

this time that wasn't working, saw this was a common issue on the X1 carbon and people used the hard reset on the bottom,
I did a hard reset, and it seems to have gotten worse, the power button is continuously flashing,
It gets 2 flashes in and then has a couple millisecond break and repeats,
trying to see if there is anything I can try before sending it in

Sorry to learn of your difficulty.

Since you have already tried the reset switch/hole, it is probably best to contact Service to see if they have any other suggestions/troubleshooting.

Regards.

When you gently push a straightened paperclip into the emergency reset hole, hold it for a full 5 seconds,

Yup, I've tried that, held it for 60 seconds too as someone said it takes that long as well

The laptop being repaired under warranty,
Does anyone know if I can remove the SSD and copy the files off of it before I send it in,
or will this void the warranty?

I believe you will not be able to get it apart to get the drive out without damage.  There are non-reusable adhesives involved

Yup, I see that they are 4 strips that have to be pulled to release,
They are similar to those 3M Command hooks, and one time use,
Though I'd assume they are going to have to replace them anyways, likely a bad motherboard.
I know Lenovos are usually user serviceable, or at-least they used to be, but this laptop is more like a tablet
I could really use the files off of this laptop or I'm going to have to spend a day going back to job sites and measuring

I would be afraid service would think I broke it.

There is usually a box to check on the form saying that you don't want the drive imaged.  l think if it were mine, I would not take it apart but I would check the box.

I should add that I keep backups of all my data.

To add to Rich's advice above... maybe if you speak with Service, they can direct you to a local authorized servicer who could open the device, pull the drive, place it in an external enclosure, and backup the contents to other media for you.

Not sure it's possible. Just a thought to explore...
