TPT2 - Win 8.1 - Display driver keeps crashing

2013-10-18, 1:37 AM

I have upgraded to Windows 8.1 on my TPT2 and installed the GA Rollup via Windows Update. Now pretty well every time I wake up my tablet the display driver crashes & is restarted.

If the response is "wait for the updated BIOS and/or display driver" can you please give some kind of time frame for when they will be released?

ADMIN EDIT - please view the solution post in this thread - also be sure to upgrade to BIOS 2.1 (and later) and all related drivers on the support site as you move to Windows 8.1  Please see this related thread.

Thanks

Re: TPT2 - Win 8.1 - Display driver keeps crashing - SOLVED!

2013-10-26, 14:08 PM

Admin edit:

The .1176 / .1177 drivers made available later via Windows update and subsequently on the Lenovo support site should provide improved performance and stability under Windows 8 / 8.1.  If you are experiencing display driver issues, we recommend you upgrade to .1176 or .1177.   You may also wish to considering updated to BIOS 2.1 or later with all the bundled drivers now available on the support site.  Please see this related thread

I'm leaving DCRDeveloper's post below marked as the solution as it was the best solution at the time and his contributions to the community in this area were valuable.

Mark,

The fix for the video issue is in the my post, but first some background.

I am truly amazed that after a week Lenovo doesn't have a clear picture that the 1160 drivers as part of the Windows 8.1 update are failing.  I am also surprised that the 1099 drivers are still on the web site without a warning that using them on 8.1 can brick your machine.

For the record my system is running Win 8.1 Standard, with Office 2013 Home Student (this was the $499 deal offered over the Labor Day Weekend).  I am running the 1.31 BIOS.  Everything was humming along just fine under 8.0.  After upgrading to 8.1, I ran head long into the "cover unlock wake from sleep" issue that has hit many users. After reading about 10 hours of internet threads I was able to discern that, Lenovo was clueless as to the problem and Intel was in denial saying it was the Manufacturers issue, but the problem is clearly in their code.  Seriously, can't you guys just call each other and nail this down.  As a user this back and forth gets really, really old!

The drivers everyone is looking for are at the Dell Bermuda site.  They are the 1130 drivers.

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/bm/en/19/driverdetails?driverid=CRT47

Here's the installation instructions.

1. download the file - these are for the Dell Latitude 10

2. The file - Intel_CLV_installer_PR7_A05_CRT47_ZPE.exe is just a self extracting zip file, so go ahead run.

3 The contents will extract to C:\dell\Drivers\CRT47

4. Once done, go in and manually update the video driver.  From Win 8.l, Open Charm Bar, Search for Control Panel.  Open System, Device Manager, Display Adapters, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator.  Next  click on the drivers tab and choose update driver.  Choose Browse My Computer, Let Me Pick...., and then make sure to click the Have Disk button.

5. You will then browse to the following location.  C:\dell\Drivers\CRT47\Drivers\Graphics or where every you unzipped the files to.

6. The system will show you two possible choices, I have tested both and found that the "igd_gfx32_clv" is the best choice.  The 50907 seems to show a black screen on wake\unlock every once and a while.  You can get around this by hitting the Windows button on the front of the tablet.

7.  Install Drivers and Reboot.

8. After Reboot run Windows update.  Windows will show you and updated video driver, it's the 1160 driver, you will want to right click (or long press) on the this update and choose hide so you will not inadvertently install this driver.

I have taken the time to post detailed instructions for the less technical among the group that are struggling with the problem, and feel that 8.1 has been more trouble than it's worth.  I hope this helps everyone.

Now that you have your temporary fix, what's different between the 1130 drivers and the 1150+?

I'll bet that if the president of Lenovo were having this problem you'd know the answer!

I second this. My Windows 8.1 installation was fine until I installed the GA Rollup via Windows Update. Now the driver keeps crashing every time I wake up my tablet from connected standby.

Interesting - I don't see the GA rollup listed in my update history, nor is it being offered to me.

Did you guys already have the 8.1 RTM running on your tablets?

I was running Windows 8 Pro and just installed the upgrade to 8.1 from the Windows Store. Everything seems OK here, although there is a slight delay (about 1 second) before the screen comes on when coming out of Connected Standby.

Edit: Aha - I've just seen a message on the Desktop that the Intel Graphics driver crashed and recovered - that's what is causing the delay...

@gcoupe: Yes, I had 8.1 RTM prior to GA release. 3 GA updates showed up yesterday for my installation. The slight delay when coming out of Connected Standby is the behaviour I encounter. As a result, the 8tracks app does not work properly (the music stops whenever I come out of connected standby/the driver crashes).

And where do we get these from?

Thanks.

I reinstalled the driver available on Lenovo's site and I don't have any crashes so far, everything seems to be working fine.

If I can get a more recent stable version, I am all for it though.

What's wrong with the one ( 9.14.3.1160 ) installed with the Windows 8.1?

My device is 3682-22U, bios 1.51 works perfect except the display driver is a bit clumsy for 1 second on wake up after the upgrade.

The 9.14.3.1130 is here : http://driver.zol.com.cn/detail/45/447888.shtml

Everything is perfect now with the 1130 driver.

I also reinstalled the 1099 driver from the Lenovo website and. so far, it doesn't crash on wakeup like the 1160 driver did.

I had a lot of problems with the 1099 driver on Windows 8.1 Preview, but those don't seem to be occurring with 8.1 final + GA rollup.

I, too, will stay with 1099 until a newer driver appears (or until some catastrophic problem occurs!)

Thanks
