Question

We have 4 x 750 Gb IBM HS hard drive bought for an IBM server x3400 which were never used and would like to know if they can be made to work on a new Lenovo TD200 server.

HD tray/caddy p/n 42R4131, mechanically, the Lenovo server case seems to be the same of IBM x3400 except for the front panel.  Will these work, and what are the considerations if they are used?

Answer

Technically, these will work although they are not officially supported, so there may be complexities in debugging any issues which arrive, and in obtaining support due to the differing terms.

For example, the  12 month waranty of the IBM options won't increase to the 3 years (or more) of the Lenovo system unit. You will also need to contact IBM service provider in case of HDD problem and Lenovo service provider in case of issue with the system unit. Also if any compatibility issue appear, support to resolve may be limited in depth since only the Lenovo HDDs are officially certified.
