RD240 Restarts

I have a RD240 server which will restart frequently.  The server is running Windows 2008 R2.  The only thing noted in the event log is that the server had shutdown unexpectedly referenced by Kernel Power.

I have applied the following workaround as detailed by Lenovo.  Anybody

Some RD240 systems may randomly reboot multiple times.

Affected configurations

The above information is associated with, but not limited to, the following    systems:

  • ThinkServer RD240

Applies to:

  • All Operating System

The system is configured with the Intel 5600 series processor.

None. Product Engineering is currently working on a fix for this issue.

Configure the BIOS to disable the processor C6 state.

To do this:

  1. Press the DEL key when booting the server to enter the BIOS setup menu.
  2. Arrow left to Advanced.
  3. Press enter for CPU Configuration.
  4. Arrow down to C6 State.
  5. Press Enter, select Disabled, and then press Enter again.
  6. Press F10 to save and exit the BIOS.

Re: RD240 Restarts

Yes, disabling your C states should be the only workaround at the moment.

Re: RD240 Restarts

I was stumped by this for a long time.  Tried everything.  Server never went longer than 14 days before doing a restart. Then a Lenovo tech said that these servers require a "true sine wave UPS" to work correctly. What the Hell? Why isn't this documented? Since I put 2 new true sine wave UPS's on it it has not done any reboots in the past 30 days.

Re: RD240 Restarts

Hi mjvrsi,

It is true that all Lenovo servers require the use of a Pure Sine Wave UPS, which should equivalent to utility power. There is a white paper in the works describing this, but it has not yet been published. It is pending review and should be posted and publicly available soon.
