Re: TS140 will not boot with External HDD attached

2014-05-19, 22:19 PM

I have disabled the USB legacy and all USB in the boot option area and the external drive is a Seagate USB, but the server just hangs at the Lenovo logo unless I disconnect the external drive.  Is there any firmware update to fix this problem?

Looks like the answer came in while I was working on my question. I will check back to see if the update at the end of the month has fixed the issue.

I really hope that Lenovo will finally fix this stupid UEFI/BIOS problem. From my experience all Lenovo PCs are affected by this problem. Unfortunately, we had to decide for other manufacturers for this reason. If there was no such problem, we definitely would have gone with Lenovo because the hardware and the prices are really good.

Thanks Nivek for the responses.  i have been keeping track of this thread through email and thankfully my client has not had many instances where the server has shutdown or restarted.

i am looking at the current bios list on Lenovo's support page.  currently the newest bios revision is 82a.  would this or previous revisions be the 'new bios' as you had stated that would/should resolve this problem?

Hi,

The latest version (82A) should resolve this issue.

From the README:

<82A>
-Fix the issue that system may stop boot when loading Citrix XenServer OS.
<81A>
-Fix the issue that some USB devices may not be recognized correctly during boot.
-Fix the issue that system may hang while trying to boot from some models of USB storages formatted as NTFS.

81A fixes were rolled into 82A.

0 person found this solution to be helpful.

This helped me too

Re: TS140 will not boot with External HDD attached

2014-06-03, 1:15 AM

I tracked this down and downloaded both the exe and txt files.

The exe file is named bios_ts140-240_fbkt82a_win_x64.exe and the text file instructs me to do one of two things:

Command Line Mode:
1. Download the package, copy the 'BIOSWIN64' package to C:\ .
2. Select "Run as administrator" to open the "Command Prompt" with Administrator privilege.
3. Input command to enter folder C:\BIOSWIN64.
4. Then input command "flash.bat" to start flash process.
5. System will automatically reboot and start the update process. Do not power off or restart the system during this procedure!
6. After the flash update completes, system will automatically reboot.

What BIOSWIN64 package? What BIOSWIN folder? Where does this come from?

-or-

Graphic User Interface Mode:
1. Right click afuwingui.exe icon and select to run as administrator.
2. When the message "To ensure that no other program interferes with the BIOS update process, it is recommended to close all other programs before continue."
pops up, click "OK" to start the update process.
3. System will automatically reboot and start the update process. Do not power off or restart the system during this procedure!
4. After the flash update completes, system will automatically reboot.

Again: afuwingui.exe icon comes from where?

These instructions appear to be for something other than what I was instructed to download, or there are a number of steps missing. Either way this is exactly the poor communication skills I have come to expect from Lenovo. Once again I am very disappointed.

Does anyone know what is supposed to be done to apply this update?

Tek_Freek,

I just downloaded the package and ran the installer for Windows. By default, the package is extracted in the C:\SWTOOLS\FLASH\BIOSWIN64 folder. Within that folder, all the files noted in the readme are present.

I was able to perform the update using the instructions from the readme. Please let me know if you continue to have problems with the update.

Thank you.

I'm a stickler for following instructions to the letter (numerous years of writing manuals) and nowhere in the instructions was it stated that the downloaded file should be run before going to step 1.

That may seem ridiculous to some, but if a company the size of Lenovo can't give clear and complete instructions then they need to hire different people. The ommision shows a lack of understanding of how to write simple instructions.

Always expect software bugs and wrong docs from any big company nowadays. Companies only look how to save money, employees may come from any country and often have low qualification and don't really care, managers don't care at all what the customers get, and technology is changing fast :(
