Can someone recommend a CPU cooler for Lenovo TS140?

2020-09-14, 12:11 PM

Hello,

I upgraded the CPU of my Lenovo TS140 and wanted to replace the original CPU cooler as well.

Unfortunately, with the new fan installed a "CPU failure error" occurs at boot time. (This doesn't seem to affect the cooling functionality, but makes it practically impossible to use the computer as a server.)

So I'm currently using the original CPU cooler again. (Part No.: 43N9700)

Does anyone have a non-original CPU cooler installed in a Lenovo TS140 that he or she can recommend?

The best case would be, if the new cooler is compatible with the mounting system of the original one. (In order to gain access to the back of the mainboard and to attach a new backplate, I would have to remove the mainboard from the case.)

Best regards

avoeee

Avoeee, From your description, I didn't find the reason why you update your CPU and whether the new CPU is supported by TS140(the new CPU model was not list out). I assume you are wanting a new cooler to supply the new CPU thermal demand. First, we suggest the upgraded/new CPU should be supported by TS140, and continue use the original cooler. After checking, on TS140, looks like only two cooler available, that is 43N9700, 03X3844, you can find it from below web: https://datacentersupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/servers/thinkserver/ts140/70a4/parts/display/compatible 2. As you know, the requriement to cooler is not just installable, but also need to meet the CPU thermal design requirement, and pass design test/verification, ortherwise, there will be unknown risk, such as system unstable, cooling issue... 3. Heatsink is an important part, we don't recommand to use the CPU that out of support below list. https://lenovopress.com/lp0034-lenovo-thinkserver-ts140#processors 4. If your new CPU is supported on TS140, please continue use the original cooler. At current stage, I'm afraid no one could provide you a suitable cooler or it is hard to do that. karl

Hello Karl111,

From your description, I didn't find the reason why you update your CPU and whether the new CPU is supported by TS140(the new CPU model was not list out).

The server is involved in rendering tasks, therefore it's nice to have a bit more computing power.

The new CPU is listed as a compatible part in "data center support" and also appears in the list you posted.

I assume you are wanting a new cooler to supply the new CPU thermal demand.

It reaches temperatures up to 76 °C, which I consider unnecessarily high.

Best regards
