Lenovo ThinkServer RD650 - Upgrading BIOS Issue

2018-12-27, 0:08 AM

Hi,

I was trying to install BIOS on my Lenovo RD650 Server. Update got stuck at some point and server is not able to go to boot stage now. I can access TSM Web but it gives me the error saying "An error occured while trying to update components."

Web TSM isn't showing any version number for BIOS as well.

I tried access TSMCLI as well but that keep giving me an error :-

"Invoke-TSMCLI : Unable to execute the requested operation. Error cause: SSL certificate error. The SSL certificate
on the specified TSM may not be valid. Verify if the certificate is not expired, if it is signed by a known
certificate authority, if the specified TSM domain name matches the certificate common name and if the certificate
was not revoked."

Hi Sir,

The latest BIOS version for RD650 is V4.70. Please refer the link to download it.

What is the current BIOS version on your system? If your bios version below 1.53, need update to 1.53 first, then flash to the latest version.

This BIOS update bundle enables you to update the server BIOS firmware via
1. ThinkServer System Manager - Web User Interface.
2. ThinkServer Deployment Manager (TDM).
3. ThinkServer System Manager - Command Line Interface (CLI).

If you are facing problem with TSM during BIOS update, would you please refer the follwoing steps to update BIOS via TDM.

For TDM update:
  - Power on your server and press F10 in the BIOS splash screen or choose "Launch TDM" in BIOS setup to launch TDM.
  - Choose "Platform Update" function in TDM.
  - Follow the steps to update the bundle files. Refer to the On-line Help for more usage instructions.

Hi Danny

I already updated bios to 1.53 and that is where server didn't boot afterwards. As per the picture attached to case, I can only get to TSM Web Interface with IP address and it is not showing any BIOS version there. If I try to update from TSM Web, it gives me the error that I attached to case and Server isn't making to TDM point at all. It just boots up with no display, unable to update through TSM web and If I try TSM CLI it gives me SSL error which is also mentioned in original post.

Please help.

Thanks

Hi Amard

Thanks for your reply.

May I ask why did you try to update BIOS? Did the system boot up properly before update BIOS?

If It just boots up with no display, unable to update through TSM web. The BIOS seems failure after update, could you please refer the RD650 user guide page61.  to recover from a BIOS update failure.

Hi Danny
My BIOS version was too old and server sometimes doesn't boot up after restart and lead us in waiting time for over 30-60 minutes.
I updated BIOS to PB1TS110 (V1.10.0) and it never booted again.
I can still access server through web interface though but no sign of display.

I assume the BIOS update failure to PB1TS110 (V1.10.0), so it never booted again.

Did you follow the "Recovering from a BIOS update failure" instruction to recover BIOS?

• Using the automatic recovery feature

• Using the BIOS recovery jumper

If you tried above instructions but still not work, I will suggest to contact with Lenovo local team for further support.
