RD450 & vSphere 7.0U1 - What SAS Raid controller should I get?

2020-10-16, 13:10 PM

Hi Everyone,

I know the RD450 has 3 raid controllers that are listed in the documentation for the system, but none are supported anymore with vSphere 7+.  I'm currently running vSphere 6.7 U3 on it with a Lenovo ThinkServer Gen5 RAID 500 PCIe Adapter.  The System is supported on 7.0U1, but the RAID controller isn't as it doesn't have a native driver (6.7 U3 leverages a non-native driver).

Would I be able to replace this card with a Lenovo 530-8i in the RD450?

Hi Abray1987

According to the Lenovo OS Interoperability Guide, the Lenovo ThinkServer RD450 v3 support up to VMware ESXi 6.7 U3.

The ThinkServer Gen5 RAID 500 PCIe Adapter don't have driver for VMware, but we have VMware 6 driver for ThinkServer RAID 510i/720i/720ix AnyRAID Adapter. You can visit the Datacenter support website to find more information about drivers.

Ok,

I found the 9340-8i (Anyraid 520) is compatible.  ESXi 7 works now but notice my fans are running higher than they used too.  Not OS related as it does it before the OS boots.  Is that normall?

Hi Abray1987

When system is booting before enter OS, the system fans speed should higher than enter OS.

If possible, you can update the UEFI and ThinkServer System Manager (TSM) to the latest version for test.

The issue is the fans never slow down.  It’s only started since changing my Anyraid 500 pcie to the 520 pcie

Hi Abray1987

The latest UEFI and TSM firmware solved few FAN speed or sensor issue. So we recommend to update the latest firmware for test.

By the way, please also try to clear CMOS for test.

I've confirmed I'm on the latest Firmware for both the Server and TSM.

I did a Factory Reset of TSM, as well as Loaded Defaults in the CMOS and still no luck.

My fans are running 5500-6000 RPMs with no load
