RS160 with VMware ESXi, 6.7.0, 14320388 Constantly restarting

2021-10-13, 21:55 PM

I have an RS160 constantly restarting.  It is running VMware ESXi, 6.7.0, 14320388.  I am not an IT specialist and really need guidance on how to get this machine back running.  I believe the issue is in the ESXi updates, but am quite lost.  I am happy to connect with a company that can assist, but have not been able to locate a reliable group.  Our office is in Oakville / Mississauga border in Ontario, Canada.  Really appreciate any guidance on how to find a reliable company to assist me.

Hi Sir,

Do you mean the server itself or the VMs constantly restart?

Is there any event logs or error message is displayed after the restart issue occurred? It would be helpful to clarify the issue.

Please check if any new hardware or software packages have been installed before the symptom occurred, and try to remove or uninstall the new changes.

If no new changes have been taken, please check all the firmware and drivers are up-to-date. RS160

If the VM constantly restart, I found a similar issue and they have some discussion there

It is the whole server.  I suspect the change may have been a VMware upgrade as it is set for automatic upgrades.  I have attached the log I was able to extract from the ThinkServer Management Module.

Not sure how to roll back a VMware update?

Hi Sir,

From the event log, I didn't see any errors or critical events related to hardware.  If you want to roll back to a previous ESXi version, I found this article from VMware which could be helpful.  Reverting to a previous version of ESXi.

If rolling back to a previous ESXi version is not helpful, please consider keeping all the firmware and drivers are up-to-date. RS160

Thank you ccchen.  I was planning just to re-install VMWare from scratch using a USB install, but seem to be having trouble getting that installed.  Looking at the BIOS updates, they are only recommended updates so likely not the cause of the issue.  Since I am running VMWare on the server I suspect I need the Linux BIOS update if I do that?

Thank you for your input and links.  I will see if I can re-install VMWare to get this machine going again.

Regards,

Robert

Hi Sir,

You can choose the BIOS Update Utility for BMC Web GUI or BIOS Recovery Utility to update the BIOS.

The Linux version only supports RedHat and SUSE Linux.

I was able to following the instructions and feel I successfully upgraded the BIOS and Firmware.  However, this has not resolved the server issues.

To add some additional information.  When the server reboots, it is not always at the same point.  It seems to get into different depths of the boot process and then I see an out of range on the monitor and the server restarts.  Sometimes it is very early in the process and other times I can see the VMWare installing before the reboot?

Hi Sir,

After installing the latest bios, have you set the BIOS setting as previously you've done on the server?

If not, please configure it to the previous settings, such as Legacy boot or UEFI mode, and the boot option priority, and then install the OS again.

Thanks ccchen.  Cannot seem to get it to boot to BIOS.  Tried Fn + F12 and also CTRL + S and it was unable to access BIOS.  I do not think it is getting far enough now to get to BIOS boot.  Looks like this is just a boat anchor now?

Hi Sir,

To access the BIOS, turn on the server and, press the F1 key as soon as you see the logo screen. Then, wait for several seconds, and the Setup
Utility program opens. If you have set a password, type the correct password to enter the Setup Utility program.

To Select a startup device, turn on or restart the server,  press F12 key to display the boot menu, the boot device selection windows opens.
