Seagate 4TB Enterprise drives shown as Unconfigured Bad Not Responding in RD340 ThinkServer

2021-04-07, 13:42 PM

Hey Lenovo community,

Having an issue trying to configure additional storage in an RD430 ThinkServer (Model 70AB001UUX). We presently have a RAID 1 with 2 x 3 TB SAS drives installed. We installed 2 x Seagate 4TB EXOS 7e8 4KN Enterprise 7200 RPM drives and we can't configure storage in the LSI MegaRAID SAS 9260-8i controller BIOS. At first the drives were seen as Unconfigured Good and Unsupported and only showed 500 GB in size each. Then we upgraded to the latest BIOS and firmware in the RAID controller, now it sees them as Unconfigured Bad, Not Responding and Unsupported and the Amber Exclamation Mark light is lit up on both those drives. I am also not able to set them as Unconfigured Good. Doesn't give me that option in the RAID Controller BIOS.

Is it because the controller doesn't support these Seagate drives?

Thanks in advance?

Hi Sir,

Please refer to this article: Are Advanced Format / 4K / 512e disk drives supported on LSI controllers?

All 4k Advanced format drives that are native (not 512e or 512b support) will not boot in legacy BIOS mode.
You will see a message, "0 Virtual drivees handled by BIOS".  You must create an EFI partition and follow the EFI installation procedure for your Operating system.

LSI1078 based controllers and all 3ware controllers- These do not support 4K drives.

CacheCade does not work with 4Kn nor can CacheCade be applied to a 4KN Virtual drive.

LSISAS2108 based controllers - These do not support 4K drives.

LSISAS2208-based - Some specific 4K drives are listed as compatible.

LSISAS3108-based - Some specific 4K drives are listed as compatible.

Models of 512, 512e, and 4K drives are listed as compatible with LSISAS2308 (6 Gb/sec) and LSISAS3008 (12 Gb/sec) on the LSI disk drive compatibility list.

12Gb/sec - https://www.broadcom.com/docs/IT-SAS-Gen3CompatibilityList

512e is supported with LSI MegaRAID LSISSAS2108-based controllers (e.g. 9260/9261/9280) starting with the MR4.8 code set release.

512e is supported with LSI MegaRAID LSISSAS2208-based controllers (e.g. 9265/9271/9285) starting with the MR5.5 code set release.
