TS140 with third-party memory

2015-11-13, 1:43 AM

My TS140 has 12GB of Lenovo memory and runs great. Found a deal on an additional 4GB, described as follows:

IBM 4GB PC3-12800 DDR3-1600MHz ECC Registered CL11 240-Pin DIMM Very Low Profile (VLP) Dual Rank Memory Module Mfr P/N 47J0164

LIke it says, it's super low-profile, I think designed for blade servers. As far as I can tell, all the specs match:  DDR3, ECC, etc. But when inserted (alone or with the Lenovo memory), I get the musical short-short-short-long beep.

I knew it was a risk trying third-party memory but can someone explain why this doesn't work? (aside from the obvious that it may in fact be bad, which I can't test).

Thanks,

I believe the TS140 requires unbuffered ECC memory.

Thank you--you're absolutely right. I guess I've always skimmed over that part of the description of memory. Little did I know that "registered" (which this memory is) is the opposite of "unbuffered." I guess this memory is too high-end for the lowly TS140! At least if incompatibility is the issue, I can re-sell this memory with a clear conscience--it's probably not bad memory.
