Hi. I am trying to upgrade the CPU on my M0981-1BU to a XEON 3470 series quad. In looking at the Intel specs, the 3470 supports the 3450 Chipset on my motherboard and obviously the LGA 1156 socket. The Lenovo Personal System Reference manual also lists the XEON 3450 as an available CPU on the 0981-1CU (I have the 1BU). As far as I can tell, the motherboards are all identical so it shouldn't be an issue, right ? Well I have installed the XEON 3470 and I get the dreaded 5 BIOS beep codes, which I believe mean it doesn't like the processor.
Does anyone have any experience in upgrading their CPUs on the TS200V ? Thanks

Thanks Zach. I sent the processor back to Newegg for a replacement. I checked connections and seating of CPU several times. Old processor worked fine but x3750 kept giving beep codes. Thanks for confirming it SHOULD work.

vantage - welcome to the forum!
before upgrading, make sure you're on the latest BIOS revision. it's possible that you're downlevel a few versions that might not have the microcode for the X3470, hence the beep codes you're getting. the CPU itself might be perfectly fine.
you can download the BIOS here: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS014923

Hi Erik. Thanks.
The BIOS upgrade is the first thing I did prior to installing the new CPU. I upgraded to rev. 5JKT60A dated 02/08/2012 (I just double checked the BIOS upon booting with the old CPU) . I just tried an x3450 that I got today and I get the same beep codes. When I put the old i5 650 back in, all is well. Is there anything else I need to do to enable the motherboard to recognize the processor ? I have upgraded Dell servers before and all I needed to do was just swap out the CPUs. Is there any trick to a Lenovo server ? Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Is it possible that I have to do something to disable the on-board video, as the Xeon processor based TS200v's come with NVIDIA Quadro FX 380 PCIe cards ? Sorry for my ignorance but this is my first Lenovo upgrade. thanx.

are you by chance still using non-ECC memory? if so then you'll need to replace it with ECC modules to be compatible with the xeon.
scratch the above. the X3470 supports non-ECC UDIMMs.
it might help to list your exact system config so we know what you have installed.

I have a TS200v model 0981-1BU that was bone stock from Lenovo. It has no OS on it now. It has:
i5-650 dual core cpu
2 - 250 GB SATA drives
Came with 4 GB UDIMM PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3 ECC
Upgraded to 16 GB Crucial 240-pin UDIMM, DDR3 PC3-10600 ECC (as recommended on their site for this model). BIOS recognizes the new memory
BIOS upgraded to rev. 5JKT60AUS
That's about it. Please tell me if you need any additional info and I can look in the BIOS. I am trying to upgrade processor to set it up as a Small Business Server 2011 machine
Thanks for the help.
