TS440 - RAID controller for ESXi

2015-07-03, 1:40 AM

Model#: 70AQ0009UX

I recently purchase the TS440 (model above) and found out that ESXi does not support soft raid setups. So, I need to purchase an actual raid controller to install into my ThinkServer. I would like to keep the cost to a minimum and use RAID 10 for my setup.

Does anybody have any suggestions for RAID controllers that work well with this unit? It'll actually be my first time purchasing a storage controller as I am setting this up for a personal home lab. If there's anything else I need to know regarding using a separate RAID controller on this machine, I'd appreciate any and all advice.

Thanks.

Was looking at the following: LSI MegaRAID 9240-8i RAID Controller Card 8-port PCI-Express 6Gb SATA/SAS

Would this work for my purposes?

Hi Azor_Ahai!

Yes, the LSI 9240 or RAID 500 card will work for what you are describing. The card as it ships is capable of RAID 0, 1 and 10. If you need RAID 5, or 50, you would need to purchase the optional RAID Upgrade Key (Option PN 0A89407).

Thanks for your response, but why is it absolutely impossible to open this thing up? I just received it today and after 'unscrewing' the thumb screw on the back, I cannot slide the side panel off. I've worked with plenty of servers/towers before and none of them have given me trouble like this. It's almost as if it's stuck/jammed/manufactured wrong. Probably going to have to return it before I chop my hands up even more trying to get it off.

Hello,

Removing the cover should not be very difficult. Here is the Hardware Maintenance Manual.  On page 67-69 of the HMM it provides detailed instructions on how to remove the server cover.  If you are still unable to remove the cover, you may call Lenovo Support and they should be able to assist you further.

Make sure that the front door on your TS440 is not locked.  If you cannot open it easily, it is locked, and that locking mechanism is integrated with an arm on the side panel to prevent opening the case.  When the front door lock is in the unlocked position, both the front door that covers the hot swap HD caddies and the side panel will open.  The front door is otherwise held closed with a modest magnet.  The sliding plate on the side is held in place with a single screw on its back edge.
