Unable to install windows 10 on TS-140

2020-01-01, 15:58 PM

I have a TS-140 with linux installed. I want to install windows 10 onto it and have already preserved any data that I need from the machine.

Aside from linux on the box itself, I generally have mac machines and have (I think) created a bootable USB disc from my mac following these instructions:

https://appleinsider.com/articles/18/01/18/tips-how-to-make-windows-10-install-media-on-macos-high-sierra

When attempting to boot the TS140 from this usb stick I get the error message "Error 1962: No operating system found. Boot sequence will automatically repeat."

It's at this point, when googling for solutions that I've become a little out of my depth. I can find lots of threads for error 1962, but none that apply to my situation of attempting to boot from a windows 10 install usb. I have no idea whether it's my usb at fault or whether perhaps my BIOS needs updating. The BIOS date in the setup page shows as "09/19/2014", which does seem very old, but I've nothing really to go on.

I'm hoping someone on here might be able to point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance!

Update

I've got additional information. When formatting the usb stick as FAT32 the machine will boot from the stick. The problem then is that FAT32 format doesn't have the capacity for the 5GB+ required for Windows 10.

I think the question I am now left with is - why won't the TS140 recognise the non-FAT32 formatted usb stick?

Hi Goose1987,

When reviewed the description, my understanding is that your question should be

"why won't the TS140 recognise the FAT32 formatted usb stick" ? not "non-FAT32" here, right? because your current problem is you think the machine didn't recoginise FAT32 USB stick

Hi Karl11 - Fat32 format appears to be the only format that the TS140 will boot from (at least from what I've tried). Unfortunately Fat32 has an individual file limit of 4GB and install.wim file is larger than this. Hence the install fails.

I'm currently following the advice here: https://justworks.ca/blog/creating-a-bootable-windows-10-usb-for-lenovo-systems

Amusingly this is causing me to try installing Windows 8 in order to use the Rufus utility as well as customise the Windows 10 iso. It seems life would be easier if I already had a Windows setup of some sort.

Will post back here to let others know whether it works.

I'm pleased to confirm that following the advice here: https://appleinsider.com/articles/18/01/18/tips-how-to-make-windows-10-install-media-on-macos-high-sierra

... solved the problem, I've now successfully installed Windows 10.

In my case I had to install Windows 8 first in order to download the correct 32/64 bit ISO and use the Rufus utility.

This helped me too
