Update BIOS on TS140 to support SSD PCIe ACHI and PCI NVMe

2016-11-06, 23:27 PM

Lenovo staff, please update/upgrade the BIOS on the Lenovo ThinkServer TS140 to support SSD PCIe ACHI and PCIe NVMe. That way people can install the operating sytem on SSDs that are PCIe based. Maybe this could be BIOS version C9A.

Thanks

Re: Update BIOS on TS140 to support SSD PCIe ACHI and PCI NVMe

I'm currently running the B7A firmware on my TS140, and am able to boot off an Intel 750 NVMe PCIe SSD without issue. I really didn't have high hopes it would work, but despite no evidence of support in the release notes, it did! I've been a little wary about upgrading the firmware in case the ability to boot off the NVMe drive is withdrawn.

The firmware must not be configured to emulate a legacy BIOS (use full UEFI mode instead), and I'm running Solaris 11.3, but any compatible OS (with NVMe drivers) might also work. Just sharing my experience, so of course, your mileage may vary.

Anyone tried this lately? I too would like to extend the life of this great little TS140 server by adding an NVMe drive. Will it work as a secondary drive? As a boot drive? Currently on firmware FBKTCZAUS dated 5/3/2018.

tried on my 2 machines and 2 x4 cards: Asus mini, Akasa.
doesn't work on latest BIOS (FBKTD0AUS 06/12/2018) :(
clearly Lenovo don't care about their budget range...

@Paper Tape, thanks the update. I've ordered the drive and adapter, will plan on using as a secondary drive only. Should still speed up my virtual machines considerably!

Ubuntu sees and installs on it, but the bloody BIOS does not put it on it's boot list.

i'm sure it's just retrofit job, from TS150 ...

I think I checked TS150 specs and there was no direct support for NVMe on the motherboard. Not sure about BIOS. You have to get into higher-end servers to get NVMe. The low-end Dell T30 server has an NVMe slot and support was initially in the BIOS but was later removed!

So the PDF does not mention TS140 or TS150 at all, hence my conclusion that they do not support NVMe.

However the forum link does mention NVMe in a TS150. Interesting. That happens to be the same adapter I bought. Maybe I'll try it when it arrives next week.
