What is the main difference between Thinksystem vs Thinkserver?

2019-06-27, 7:59 AM

Hello,

We are planning to buy a server for our small company (5-8 employees), However,in server towers, there are two main models Thinksystem and Thinkserver, what's the main difference between the two models?

Our main requiment:

- Data sharing ( sharing folder)

- Backup

- Remote/branch offices: able to access from any where to the server.

we are thinking about:

- Thinkserver TS150 vs Thinksystem ST50

- Thinkserver TS460 vs Thinksystem ST250

---------------------------- Technicals

- 16 RAM  X3  = 48GB

- Hard disk 1 TB  X4 = 4 TB

- WinSvrSTDCore 2019 SNGL OLP NLCoreLic  X1 = 1

- FortiGate Firewall -30 E Hardware Cat no: FIR-X030   X1 = 1

So,

1- What's the main difference between Thinkserver and Thinksystem ?
2- which model is more flexible for customization and upgrade in future?
3- based on our technical, which one is the best for us?

We highly appreciate your support

Malik,

ThinkSystem.

ThinkSystem is a newer generation server, it support newer Intel CPUs and chipset. Other than that, these two systems are very similar: entry level single socket servers.

Depending on how long you plan to continue using this system, the newer model may also be a better option thinking on parts availability years down the line, if any replacement parts are ever needed.

When configuring your system, try to avoid RAID 5, whether you use TS150 or ST50, RAID 5 performance is limiting on entry level system without specialized RAID controller.  RAID level will make the most difference on this server when used for backups, particularly when writing to the disks.  RAID 1 or 10 are the best options.

Dear,

In general, ThinkServer is the old/last generation, and most of ThinkServer is end of production(EOP), what I observed for the planning, FYI:

for TS150, EOP is 2018/1/31 around,

for TS460, EOP is 2017/10/31 around,

So, not sure if you still could order those ThinkServer models.

ThinkSystem is the latest genneration which was lauched just last year. ThinkSystem is designed with the latest technology and is now in production. I believe ThinkSystem will have a better performance.

For the detailed differences, you can check the product guide from following website:

https://lenovopress.com/#sort=relevance

So from my personal view, I would suggest you to buy the ThinkSystem, not the ThinkServer models that are sunseting.

BR

Karl

1- What's the main difference between Thinkserver and Thinksystem ?
2- which model is more flexible for customization and upgrade in future?
3- based on our technical, which one is the best for us?

1. ThinkServer line has been sunset in NA, so don't bother looking at it (if there are some left in the distribution channel it's just left over stock). ThinkSystem is the current porfolio and what you should be looking at buying. Lenovo has taken the best of ThinkServer and System x technology and built into ThinkSystem

2. The higher the model the more flexible it will be; in this case, the ST250 offers more scalability options drive wise, more GPU options, more advanced remote management, see here: ST50 and ST250

3. Either will suffice performance wise (CPU/mem) it all depends how much storage capacity you need, as well as your requirement for remote management; the ST250 has overall better features when it comes to both of these things.
