missing CIM provider in ESXi 6.0.0 ?

2020-09-29, 13:23 PM

Hi all.

I'm unable to retrieve status of physical disks from ESXi CLI, vSphere etc.

Lenovo - RD550 (ThinkServer) SN: S4F89540

I'm seeing: "The Small Footprint CIM Broker Daemon (SFCBD) is running, but no data has been reported. You may need to install a CIM provider for your storage adapter."

More details of my issues can be found here: https://communities.vmware.com/message/2983991

It looks like I might need to update a driver or install a module.

Can somebody advise what exactly needs to be done and whether it's safe (i.e. won't make matters worse)?

Regards,
Adam

Thank you for your reply Rick.

Following the download instructions offered only VMW-ESX-7.0-lsiprovider-00.79.V0.01.zip (the server runs ESXi 6.0).

From the other hand when I searched Broadcom website for VMWare SMIS Provider VIB - MR 5.6 I got this: https://docs.broadcom.com/docs/12351426

The file name is 00_37_V0_04_SMIS_VMware_Installer.zip and it seems to only be for ESXi 4.x and 5.x

Also my controller LSI MegaRAID Lenovo Thinkserver RAID 720ix AnyRAID adapter is not listed under compatibility list in README.

Which of the two shall I install?

Or maybe I need something else?

Hi AdamW-MS,

Give it a shot!

1. Go to the following link:

https://www.broadcom.com/support/download-search?pg=Storage+Adapters,+Controllers,+and+ICs&pf=Storage+Adapters,+Controllers,+and+ICs&pn=&pa=&po=Lenovo&dk=&pl=,

2. Click + for Management Software and Tools.

3. Click the column title OS to sort the list by Operating System find the Management Software and Tools,

4. Find the ESXi 6.0, and find the CIM Provider Package for VMware

5. Click the Download Icon (arrow) in column 5 to download the file.

6. Follow the instruction here to install the file.

Re:missing CIM provider in ESXi 6.0.0 ?

The installation failed on first attempt:

esxcli software vib install -d VMW-ESX-6.0.0-emulex-cim-provider-11.4.142.11-01-offline_bundle-6422346.zip

[MetadataDownloadError]

Could not download from depot at zip:/var/log/vmware/VMW-ESX-6.0.0-emulex-cim-provider-11.4.142.11-01-offline_bundle-6422346.zip?index.xml, skipping (('zip:/var/log/vmware/VMW-ESX-6.0.0-emulex-cim-provider-11.4.142.11-01-offline_bundle-6422346.zip?index.xml', '', "Error extracting index.xml from /var/log/vmware/VMW-ESX-6.0.0-emulex-cim-provider-11.4.142.11-01-offline_bundle-6422346.zip: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/var/log/vmware/VMW-ESX-6.0.0-emulex-cim-provider-11.4.142.11-01-offline_bundle-6422346.zip'"))

       url = zip:/var/log/vmware/VMW-ESX-6.0.0-emulex-cim-provider-11.4.142.11-01-offline_bundle-6422346.zip?index.xml

Please refer to the log file for more details.

The file had to be executed from /var/log/vmware which the instructions didn't mention:

[root@esxi60:/var/log/vmware] esxcli software vib install -d VMW-ESX-6.0.0-emulex-cim-provider-11.4.142.11-01-offline_bundle-6422346.zip

Installation Result

Message: The update completed successfully, but the system needs to be rebooted for the changes to be effective.

  Reboot Required: true

  VIBs Installed: EMU_bootbank_emulex-cim-provider_11.4.142.11-01OEM.600.0.0.2768847

  VIBs Removed:

  VIBs Skipped:

esxcli software vib list | grep cim

emulex-cim-provider            11.4.142.11-01OEM.600.0.0.2768847      EMU     VMwareAccepted    2020-11-04

This was followed by a reboot but unfortunately my problem persists. The CIM provider still reports to be missing. ESXi can only see virtual drives in degraded state (which is a false positive) and hasn't got a clue about individual disks and their health :(

Hi AdamW-MS,

Try this: https://datacentersupport.lenovo.com/downloads/ds503097

Both the M5225 and RAID 720i use the same 3108 RoC controller, it is supposed to be worked on the RAID 720i.
