3 Monitors - help!

2021-03-19, 19:13 PM

Hi all.

Firstly thanks in advance for any helpful replies.

I recently purchased two P340 TWR workstations (30DH00HJUK) before purchasing the product, I read the description and it said "With up to three DP ports and support for up to 11 independent displays" I didn't notice that it said "up to three display ports" and once the computers arrived I noticed that they only had two display ports.

Unfortunately I'd already purchased three monitors and also a triple monitor stand for each computer.

I did notice that alongside the two display ports that there is a VGA port.

My question is what is the best way to get three monitors to work on this machine?

Is it possible to use both DP's and the VGA and use all three monitors? Or is there some kind of adapter I can buy to add an extra display port? I can't daisy chain the monitors because they don't have a display port out, just the display port in.

Thank you!
Nathan.

I think that port above one of the Display Port (DP) jacks is a 9-pin serial port, and not a 15-pin VGA port, so your only option short of adding a discrete video card with 3 DP outputs, would be to get a DP splitter similar to this one to span the image from one of your DP jacks across two monitors.

Cheers,

Does your config has integrated Intel graphics or discrete GFX?

Won’t the splitter give you 2 exact copies of the same display? Or you still can operate them independently?

Oh dear! I was really hoping that was a VGA and it would work!I don't mind getting the splitter, but as per the question below "Won’t the splitter give you 2 exact copies of the same display? Or you still can operate them independently?"Cheers!

Manufacturer page says you can use extended display with that splitter, but in Win10 only. I have a doubts about 3 displays tho, with one connected directly and 2 daisy chained through splitter. Also consider resolution and frame rate limitations.

All in all, getting Discrete GFX is the best solution, but you can definitely try a splitter, especially if you can return it in case it does not work for your config.

Cromanin is correct, you have the option of cloning the monitors, or extending the monitor across two monitors, essentially making the two into one large screen.   Adding a graphics card with 3 DP ports is an option, but graphic card prices are ridiculous right now.

I would recommend a splitter that gets powered via a USB cable.

Thanks for the replies both!

So if I were to use the Startech splitter above, I would basically have one independent monitor and two extended?

If I use a USB-DP adapter Would that then work as three independent displays? 2 from the DP's and one from the USB?

Otherwise if I were to add a GPU to get three display ports, would I need to choose one that has 3 DP ports? Or would I be able to choose one that has only one port, and also use the two DP ports from the motherboard at the same time?

Thank you!!

Edit: Or possibly something like this? I am so confused! Thanks again for the help.

I think you are making the matter extremely complicated with those adaptors )

If you read the forum you will see that Lenovo systems are plagued with compatibility / instability / bugs as they are, without adding third party hardware to the mix. So if you can afford it, I’d suggest going for 3 output GFX. Will you be able to run 2 monitors off the MB and 1 off the GFX? I honestly do not know. You can check your BIOS if there any signs that will work, but anyway it will probably depend on GFX you will choose.

Thank you, I want to avoid bugs and instability, so I'd rather go with a fool-proof solution.

What about daisy chaining the monitors?

I could buy a monitor which has a DP IN and a DP OUT and use it as the middle monitor.

So I could go from DP port 1 to monitor 1, then DP2 to monitor 2, then monitor 2 to monitor 3. This is what was recommended by eBuyer, the company I bought the computers from, but I'd rather check first.

If this is still too complicated, then I could go for a GPU like this: https://www.ebuyer.com/831067-pny-quadro-p620-v2-2gb-dvi-low-profile-graphics-card-vcqp620dviv2-pb

But I'm worried that this GPU would actually have worse performance than the i9-10900K on board graphics, so technically a downgrade. Or is that not how it works?

Cheers.
