Anyone experience with new Thinkstation P620 ? Mine crashes randomly under high load (Blue Screen)

2020-11-13, 11:28 AM

Hi,

My newly purchased ThinkStation P620 crashes radomly under high load (BSOD).

Problem persists after updating windows and all drivers. Ran all hardware diagnostics tests without any error.

Now I'm concerend that there might be general stability issue with the relatively new hardware setup because the P620 is the first and only workstation using the brand new AMD ThreadRipper PRO processor.

So I would like to ask if other workstation users may have experienced similar instability issues, in particular with the P620 under high load scenarios.

Thanks & Regards,

b.

I believe this is the first that we're hearing about P620 BSOD issues under high load.  Can you please give us a little more details about your system configuration? Also, what applications/tests are you running on the P620 at high load that's causing the BSOD issue?

Also, how often does the system crash/BSOD under high load?

Here are the details:

WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR

debugCheckCode=0x124

debugParameter1=0x10, all other parameters are 0

- Crashes about every 10 hours while running a custom developped CFD simulation (avg. 90% load on all 32 cores)

- Max. CPU temperature less than 90 degrees

- Turbo-Boost deactivated

All available diagnostics checks performed without findings from Lenovo Vantage and from the BIOS via "F10"

Of course all software, OS, drivers and BIOS updated.

It would be really great if this could be resolved soon. Because otherweise I have to return/refund the thinkstation.

one additional remark: Maybe the debugParameter1=0x10 of the debugCheckCode=0x124 of the WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR could provide some insight. Strangely I couldn't find documentation on this specific value "0x10" of the debugCheckParameter1. So this could be something specifc and may help to find the root cause of the error.

I think it would be best if you could open a Lenovo Support Ticket.

Also, what's your machine type model (MTM) of the P620? You can find this either from the system label on the outside of the system or from within BIOS F1 setup on the main screen page.

MTM 30E0 CTO1WW

I already contacted the support. But other than "run the diagnostic checks" it was not very helpful.

So I would really appreciate additional help from the community.

Can you please provide your detailed hardware configuration?  Unfortunately with CTO models we don't have visibility into those like we would with traditional models.

Have you added any hardware to the system, or are you using it as it was configured from the factory?

I am concerned because 0x124 BSOD seems to indicate a non-trivial load-related hardware issue.

from https://answers.microsoft.com/:

A "stop 0x124" is different from most other types of bluescreens because it stems from a hardware complaint.

Stop 0x124 minidumps contain very little practical information, and it is therefore necessary to approach the problem as a case of hardware in an unknown state of distress.

Does the crash only occur when running your "custom developed CFD simulation" application?

Or does it happen with other software package(s) as well?

Is this CFD application based on any known simulation software (such as Ansys or some other software package)?

Have you successfully run this software on other Intel or AMD platforms?

Obviously there is a lot of testing that goes into products like this prior to launch, but we also obviously can't test everything.  Without knowing more detail about the application you're using that's inducing the crash, I'm not sure how much help we can be, especially if we can't reproduce the problem.
