Are fingerprint scanners compatible with P340 SFF & Tiny?

2021-08-31, 22:41 PM

I don't see this as a configuration option or add-on, but can I use a some type of fingerprint scanner with the P340s, so I can use it to unlock my machine and also as Touch ID for some applications (like I do with my Thinkpad T460s)?  If so, which products are compatible and what kind of configuration is necessary?

Though we don't have any "supported" fingerprint reader devices, there may be some 3rd party off-the-shelf fingerprint readers you might be able to use and be compatible.

We don't support any fingerprint readers for the P340 SFF or Tiny.  However, we do offer a USB fingerprint mouse that has a fingerprint scanner on the mouse itself. The part number for that device is: 00PH142

Hmmm....bummer, this is potentially a deal-breaker for me.  Does this mean the whole system cannot support them, or can I buy a third party fingerprint reader of some kind?  I already have a mouse that I use (the Logitech Anywhere) so unfortunately that's not a trade-off I can make.  Thanks for your help.

There actually is a fingerprint mouse that is qualified on P340 for Tower, SFF, and Tiny.  This is similar to our standard mouse, but it does have an integrated fingerprint scanner on the device.  That tells me that P340 TWR/SFF and P340 Tiny both should have the necessary BIOS support needed to support the fingerprint scanner function.  Obviously there would still need to be a driver installed for it on the SW/OS side, but it should work.  The FRU for that mouse is 00PH142.  It might also be available via Option PN 4Y50Q64661, though the PN structure under that looks somewhat different for some reason.

I would be hopeful that other retail fingerprint devices would function properly as well, but obviously that's a pretty broad statement and we've only fully qualified the fingerprint mouse mentioned above.
