Did Lenovo put a slower SSD disk on the P340 tiny than on the P330 tiny?

2021-04-01, 21:08 PM

I just started setting up my Lenovo P340, I already own a P330. I did run CrystalMark on both machines today and it surprised me to see that some numbers are twice better on the Samsung included with the P330 than with the WD included with the P340, I expected the same or better on this new machine, it is way more expensive than my P330. Same OS (Windows 10 x64 Pro) and all drivers updated on both machines. Maybe the numbers in questions, the Random R/W test are not that relevant for everyday operation? Any input appreciated, I am no expert and highly probable I am looking only at the surface of the matter. Thank you!

The latest BIOS M2WKT45A just released by Lenovo a few hours ago solved the problem of slow disk performance on the P340 with disk WDC PC SN730 SDBQNTY-1T00-1001, performance test numbers are now very similar if not better than the P330's Samsung as well as Applications startup time.

Do you have any of the other specs from both your P330 and P340? If you can post your machine type / model number (not serial numbers) from each system, we can take a look at all the hardware in the two systems.

I have run this by our performance and storage teams. Will let you know when I get a response.

Hi @mcordova - here is initial feedback from our performance team:

Previous testing of these two drives in systems with all other HW being equal has shown drive performance to be comparable. Tested on the same hardware and in the same test conditions, the performance data on the two drives is within 10-13%.

Typically, cross platform NVMe drive comparisons are not recommended, as they are affected by differences in architecture, CPUs, and any other subtle differences between the systems.

Try the following:

Run the same CrystalDiskMark tests a few times to see if results are consistent

Perform a clean reboot (Windows Key+R, then type shutdown -r)

Perform a Windows disk optimization (Right click on drive, select Properties>Tools>Optimization)

Ensure that the drive has cache enabled (Device manager>Disk Drives>Properties>Policies)

Re-run the CrystalDiskMark tests to see if results have changed at all

Download AS SSD Benchmark tool:  https://as-ssd-benchmark.en.softonic.com/ and run it to see if you get comparable data

Re:Did Lenovo put a slower SSD disk on the P340 tiny than on the P330 tiny?

2021-04-05, 15:21 PM

Thank you @PfatMan for the reply, my P340 has superior hardware than my P330, but putting tests aside, the practical results are more relevant for my daily work, and I can see that I/O related activity, like starting software I often use is way slower on the P340 with its WD ssd than in my P330 with the samsung ssd, for instance, the same Tomcat 7 installation on my P330 starts in 1.8 seconds but in my brand new P340 starts in 3.5 seconds, I repeated the task several times on both machines and these are my avg times for this specific case, Tomcat itself reports its startup time so it is not a subjective time reading taken by myself. I think that an SSD upgrade would benefit the P340 tiny but so far I am very disappointed with the machine, not the upgrade that I expected, considering that I moved from I7 9700t to I9 10th generation and faster RAM, I was expecting faster ssd or same, not less. Regards.

Hi @mcordova - I understand your concern. This is the next suggestion / test request that I received back from the performance team:

To rule out other impacts for drive performance, can you please take Samsung P981a drive from p330 and put it in P340 (the empty slot) and run the benchmark? All the data on the drive will not be disturbed by running the benchmark. Please select the original boot drive (SN730) in the post boot menu by hitting F12 to boot. In CrystalDiskMark GUI, make sure to pick the target drive you want to benchmark on.  Another thing you could check is to run the 4k random test at high thread and queue depth such as thread 16 and queue depth 4 (or 32) as an example to confirm if the drive can get higher performance. Higher threaded and queue depth workload should be benefited from the CPU with higher number of cores.

Additionally, I assume that your P340 is under warranty - I would suggest opening a support case to explain the performance hit you are seeing from your higher spec'd system and see what they can do for you.
