Re:Flash BIOS update released on March 17 2021 not installing on Tiny P330

Where can I get the BIOS update disc?  Is this an ISO disc I need to make?

Thanks,

Roger

@rtcook you are braver than me, I will wait (impatiently) for your results. Will you use a USB pen drive with the new bios or with the current bios to try to fix whatever problem prevents the update? What's the plan?

I contacted Lenovo's support via Chat, they suggested that given the circumstances that all regular ways to update bios failed, and considering that the machine was left in a workable state, it was better to wait for the next bios flash update.

Get your serial number, go to Lenovo's software/drivers download page, enter your serial number, go to manual update and select the bios uefi category, there you will find the different packages and instructions for each one. Regards, Martin

Yes.  There are various ways to do it.  There is one there that you create an ISO disc and use it to update the BIOS, but it requires you to open the case and switch the CMOS jumper first according to the User Guide instructions.   Not all that difficult.   Just want to be sure this is what the Lenovo guy is talking about before I attempt it.

Yes the BIOS recovery method will require you to move the CMOS clear jumper on the board to initiate the process.

The basic concept behind it is to move the clear CMOS jumper to the clear position (pins 2-3 usually), and then attempt to boot the system while providing it with a valid BIOS image file.  The system should boot, clear CMOS and prompt with 2 beeps, and then start to look for the BIOS image file on available media.  That image file can be created by burning a CD/DVD from the ISO .  Of course that would require the use of an external ODD drive since Tiny does not have support for an internal one.   I believe the image file can also be provided via USB, but the image must be located in the root of the USB drive in order for it to work.  To be honest, I'm a bit fuzzy on the USB method as I typically just use the CD/DVD method.  Once the recovery completes and the system powers down, you'd need to move the clear CMOS jumper back to the normal position (pins 1-2 usually) before attempting to boot the system normally.

That's exactly what I got out of the documentation.   Thanks for confirming.  I will give it a shot.  I will be going the ISO on CD route.  I'll post back after I'm done.  Hopefully by this weekend.

Psuturtle,

My problem was created from a BIOS update on Lenovo Vantage.   Can you explain why my current problem happened?  I did a BIOS update before on Lenovo Vantage and it went fine.  I did nothing different and did not interrupt power.  Bad update?  Conflicts with Windows 10 updates?

Thanks,

Roger

CMOS jumper should be moved from 5-6 to 2-4 according to the manual.   Seems odd to go across the jumpers.  Can you confirm?

Re:Flash BIOS update released on March 17 2021 not installing on Tiny P330

Ok.  Reporting back.  I have not tried to install the BIOS via ISO by switching the jumper yet.  Have been reading and exploring other options.

I have found that my wireless keyboard will not work to navigate the current BIOS.  I used a wired keyboard and all works well.  So, I am not sure if a BIOS can be navigated with a wireless keyboard or if there is an issue with my current BIOS.

Also, and I found this odd/interesting, the previous BIOS update from Lenovo Vantage that was supposedly successful was M1UKT62A.  This is what shows in as my current BIOS.  The current BIOS update Lenovo Vantage is trying to do is M1UKT65A and it is of course failing.  In the directions for installing the BIOS via flash it has a list of the previous BIOS's.  According to that, the prior BIOS to M1UKT65A is M1VKT5DA, not M1UKT62A.  M1UKT62A does not even appear as a previous BIOS for a Lenovo P330!  I think this may be the problem.  Lenovo Vantage somehow installed an incorrect BIOS version.  Now, I may have to do the BIOS update via ISO.  Just not sure if I should try M1UKT65A or go back to M1VKT5DA.  I honestly do not know what the prior version was on my machine before Lenovo Vantage installed M1UKT62A.  I have Googled M1UKT62A and cannot find what machine this BIOS is for.

Still pondering what to do.  Comments welcome.  I am in really no hurry to brick my machine as it appears to be working fine.

Roger
