Help - Any workaround for Processor options on p920?

2020-05-28, 13:21 PM

Hi can someone help with 2 questions?

I'm looking to buy a Thinkstation for 3D cad programs with rtx 6000 gpu and hope to add another in the future.

Can i do this with the p520 or is the power supply not up to it?

Which leads to my second question...

Ideally i would take the p920 as i could upgrade over time but the processor options are all Xeon silver and gold series with slow clock speeds. Can i order a p720 or p920 with a Xeon W processor and motherboard not on the list?

cheers

Currently, P520 will support up to a single RTX6000 GPU as dual RTX6000 GPUs would not be supported on the platform.  In order to support dual RTX6000 GPUs with the current platform lineup, you'd have to be on the P920.

However, that should be changing in the near future with some coming upgrades to P520.  So if you truly want to stick to a single CPU platform, you might want to consider holding out for a bit if you can.

Unfortunately you cannot use Xeon-W CPUs in P920.  The sockets between Xeon-W parts used in P520/P520c and Xeon-SP parts used in P720/P920 are completely different and not interchangeable.

Thanks for taking the time to answer this for me so well - ive been up and down the lists looking at configurations. Cheers. I'm probably going to go for the p920. Last question - Is it possible to put a third party motherboard easily in a p920?

Out of interest - Is the upgrades to the p520 roughly months or weeks way?

No it would be extremely difficult to add a 3rd party motherboard to a P920 system.  But I'm curious why you'd be considering replacing the motherboard on a brand new system anyway?  The P920 motherboard, power supply, and storage design are completely custom so it would be rather difficult to shove an off-the-shelf motherboard in there and get it to work.

For the upgrades, it should be a couple of weeks.  Should be on the website by mid-June hopefully.  If GPU upgrades are an important factor, I'd wait (if you can) as there are updates hitting both P520 and P920 at that time.

I think you are right, ill wait. I've coming from Mac to PC so i can get a workstation for Cinema4D with Xparticles and Octane gpu renderer. Feeling out of my depth here finding a computer. Im not an expert so im going by reviews and youtube on what ive learned... - Cinema4d uses a single CPU 3.5GHz cpu or higher. - Xparticles simulations work well with multiple cores. - Octane is solely GPU based. I was trying to find computer with a CPU that could give me the high clock speeds that i could upgrade in the future (add another GPU etc) and arrived at this point... P520 with a Xeon w2265 (3.5ghz / 12cores) 64g ram and a rtx6000 or P920 with a Xeon Gold 6246 (3.3ghz / 12cores) 64g ram and a rtx6000 Thanks for all the feedback and help - its been daunting. lol
