INSTALLING A 2nd PROCESSOR IN P720

2018-08-01, 14:13 PM

Hi,

I have ordered one additional intel xeon Silver 4114 to place in my P720.

Beyond a heat sink & processor fan (e.g. http://www.zones.com/site/product/index.html?id=105448433), do I need to purchace anything more? The hardware manual mention a "microprocessor retainer" but that wasn't included with the thinkstation, right?

please share experience on this!

thanks,

Anders

Yes with the Purley based platforms, there is an additional plastic piece that is needed beyond just the traditional CPU and heatsink when attempting this upgrade.  The plastic retainer is designed to attach the CPU to the heatsink, and then that entire module is then installed to the motherboard/CPU socket.

If you're ordering our official Option kits for this, they should consist of the heatsink and plastic retainer.

4XG0Q171687 is the Option PN for the heatsink kit for the 2nd CPU on P720.

Also note that the heatsink screw torque is critically important when installing heatsinks on any 2P Purley based platform (such as P720 and P920).  Heatsink screws should be torqued in order (per the diagram on the heatsink itself) to 12 inch pounds of torque.

Thank you for your reply,

I've now recieved the offivial lenovo heat sink, 4XG0Q17168 (the kit part no that I assume you meant in your reply).

However, there was no plastic retainer for the microprocessor included.

What sould I do? I cannot fint such a plastic retainer anywhere online...

with regards,

Anders

Re: INSTALLING A 2nd PROCESSOR IN P720

From what I can tell, the structures for the Option kits were updated in June to make sure the CPU clips were added to the kit.  If you purchased this kit brand new recently, then I suspect it's possible that the Option stock wasn't flushed properly to ensure all in stock material was upgraded.

In looking at this a little more closely, I think there's another issue with the part structure for these heatsink option kits that need to be fixed.  Per the guidance, you should have ordered 4XG0Q17167 (as per me previous post).  However that option kit is currently populated with what I believe to be an incorrect heatsink at the moment.  The heatsink you need is actually in kit 4XG0Q17168, which just so  happens to be the one you ordered.

So, we both get some work items out of this one :)

You should go ahead and contact whomever you purchased the option kit from and explain to them that the kit is missing the plastic CPU retainer.  This is L2 part number SM27A15338 (or SM27A00680).  My guess is they're likely not going to have a clue what you're talking about, but perhaps you can show them this thread to try to help them understand.

If all else fails, shoot me a PM with your info and I'll see what we can do to correct this for you.

(And for reference, my work item is to go try to get all of this mess fixed :)).

Re:INSTALLING A 2nd PROCESSOR IN P720

Given that these posts are from 2+ years ago and there seem to have been problems with the contents in the second CPU kits, is there an update to the kit numbers (CPU/heatsink/fan) I would order?

I recently purchased a p720 workstation (MTM 30BB-S15800). Can you tell me what the appropriate kit to order for the second CPU is?

One problem is that I have seen photos of kits that say they are for the p720 workstation but have two different heatsink assemblies in them, so I am not sure what to order.

Thanks for any help you can provide. If you need more information about my p720, let me know.

Steve

The issues with the heatsink kits (specific to the missing CPU clip) has been resolved quite a while ago.

What CPU is in your system, or what CPU(s) are you planning to upgrade to?  That info will help make sure we're pointing you in the right direction.

The system is a p720 BB30 with a Xeon Silver 4114 10-core, 2.2Ghz cpu in it.

Somewhere I read that the chip is 85 watts (heat dissipation?)

I am looking to add a second CPU for this system.

Thanks!

Steve

Sorry, I did what I think was a new posting rather than a reply.

These are the system details:

Thanks for the info.  Your upgrade should be pretty straight forward.

I'm not sure if this option part is still available, but 4XG0Q17161 is the Option PN for the Xeon 4114 CPU.  There should really be no difference between the Lenovo Option part and a retail CPU though in terms of specs.

You should be able to use either of the available heatsink Option kits to support the 2nd CPU.

  • 4XG0Q17167 - This is the option kit for the 150W heatsink.  This is the one that would come from the factory if you ordered the 2nd CPU in the original system.
  • 4XG0Q17168 - This is the option kit for the 205W heatsink.  This would also be more than effective for use with the Xeon 4114 (which is rated at 85W TDP).
  • Both heatsink option kits listed above should come with the plastic CPU clip required to install the CPU.

Note that once you install the 2nd CPU, it's recommended that you rebalance your memory equally across both CPUs, following the DIMM slot fill order listed in the user guide or in the P920 memory whitepaper.

Thanks very much! I think the Lenovo "store" still lists the Xeon Silver 4114 CPU. Both heatsinks are available from a 3rd party if not Lenovo. I did read about rebalancing the DIMM slot fills - there's a nice guide for it in the download for the P720 workstation.
