Lenovo ThinkStation P910 and Xeon E5 V3 CPU support

2016-11-12, 22:54 PM

Hi all, I am considering the purchase of a P910.

However I would like to use my Xeon E5-2650L V3 CPUs instead of the preinstalled E5-2603 V4 that comes with the unit in the cheapest configuration.

Is this possible?

The E5-2650L V3 is known to be compatible with the P900, but I assume there is no high demand on these CPUs on workstations, hence it is not on the CPU support list.

I saw that the CPU Support list for the P910, mentions some V3 CPUs (i.e. 2609 V3 and 2620 V3), so I would assume the 2650L V3 would be also supported? This is an 65W energy efficient CPU, so I cannot see of any problems in chipset and mainboard support (in terms of thermals, physical and electrical socket support).

Please advise so that I can proceed into ordering the P910 accordingly.

Good question.  I know Intel had some holes in the v4 CPU stack that they decided to continue to offer v3 CPUs to be used on "v4 platforms".  That should mean the CPU patches are in place in BIOS to allow it to work, but I don't know off the top of my head if all of the patches are there, especially for the CPU you're looking to use.

I can check this when I get back in the office sometime next week.

Note that even if this happens to work, it still is not something that would be officially supported by Lenovo.  Just something to keep in mind.

Also, the 2560L v4 CPU is officially supported on P910.  It's likely not listed on the web configurator since as you mention it is not a high demand part.  However, the processor has been tested and is supported.  You would likely have to call in and talk with sales about purchasing a P910 with those specific  2650L v4 CPUs if you wanted to go that route.  They would likely have to take it through the special bids path.  Or you could purchase/install the CPUs on your own as well, though this would leave  you with the 1-2 original CPUs that you wouldn't need.  Just another option to think about.

Hi and thank you for your reply.

I compeltely understand, however I am in the situation of either purchasing a P900 (old stock at a good price), or a brand new sealed P910 at a discounted price (with a 5 year onsite NBD warranty plan for an additional £300).

If both of them could support the 2650L V3 CPUs, then I guess the P910 seems like a more tempting option (especially when it comes with the extra warranty pack as configured).

I would really really appreciate if you could reply to me as soon as you are back in the office, so that I could purchase the unit today if possible.

The important bit: I do want to keep the existing 2650L V3 CPUs I have (so no plan to buy any V4 ones for the next couple of years).

Thank you and kind regards.

It will be at least a week before I'm back in the office.  I've sent a message another person on our team to see if they can possibly run this check for you.  I'll let you know if I get any feedback.

Good news.  I had somebody on our team check this CPU configuration and it does seem to work OK.  Again, not officially supported, but it looks like you should be able to use the 2650L v3 in the P910 if you so choose.

Hi and thank you for your reply.

I really appreciate the quick response.

It looks like my supplier had mispriced the P900 so instead of being delivered with 1x CPU, it seems it has a Dual CPU (so not bad at all as a deal and I placed an order, arriving today).

If for any reason it is not as advertised, I will send it back and order a P910 and fit my E5-2650L V3 CPUs.

Once again, thank you for the speedy reply and the very good news provided. Your support is really amazing.
