Lenovo Thinkstation P700 won't power on

2020-06-21, 18:06 PM

I purchased refurbished ex-corporate P700 and when it came in the post it would not turn on. The green light on the PSU goes on when plugged into the mains but pressing the power button (short or long presses) does nothing - no noises, fans, leds, no usb power, nothing at all. Reseated all ram sticks, pcie graphics card, PSU and front pannel connectors (F_MAIN) - no dice. My next step was trying to short the power-on pins to bypass the power button and rule that out, but I can't find any motheboard manual saying which pins are which. There are 24 of them (see photos), any ideas? Thanks.

Normally jumping the the green wire (PS-ON) to a black wire (ground) will power on an ATX PSU so you can test for voltages, but in your image it appears that there are two green wires.    My guess is that it would be the one next to the heavy gauged black ground.

I would imagine that the voltages would still match those of a standard ATX PSU shown here:   https://www.smpspowersupply.com/connector_atx_pinout.GIF

Rather than risking shorting the wrong pins, I would unplug, remove the main battery and disconnect the CMOS battery.  Press the power button a couple of times to drain capacitors and put it back together.  It will start asking you to set date and time, assuming it isn't a brick.

I did as you suggested - removed the PSU and CMOS battery, then but them back in and the PC spun right up! Will need to check if everything is working as expected. Why would this happen and is this something to worry about? How is it possible for a PC to be completely dead (after seller refurbished) but come to life by just taking the CMOS battery out and putting it back in?

P700 doesn't have a standard ATX power connector or standard power supply like many off the shelf boards, so I would avoid shorting wires there unless you know exactly what they are doing.

Shorting pins 1-2 in that front panel header should short the power_switch+ and power_switch- signals which should fire the board up assuming everything else is OK.   The image below shows pins 1 and 2 in that connector.

As for how something like this could have happened, it's hard to say.  However I think the phrase "after seller refurbished" is pretty key.  Difficult to know if the person or team doing the refurbishing really knew what they were doing.  Glad your system is back up and running though.

Re:Lenovo Thinkstation P700 won't power on

Unfortunately whilst I've got past this issue by replacing the CMOS battery and the PC spins up (fans, GPU lights), it does not boot. After a short while (~60 seconds) of the PC being on with a green light on the power button and the 4 usb slots illuminated, the red warning LED comes on and the USB slot with the wrench LED starts flashing. The connection from the GPU to the monitor is not recognised so there is no screen output. I've tried downloading the diagnostics from on a FAT32 USB device from the flashing wrench USB port but this never downloads. The flashing wrench + warning LED come one even with no GPU in any of the PCIe slots. Any ideas as to what could cause this?

Edit: just checked, in this state (powered on with red triangle warning LED and flashing wrench) only 1/4 of the front USB ports can charge a phone, possibly the reason I can't download the diagnostics file?

Edit: removed everything from the board apart from the CPUs, powering on results in long beeps dues to missing RAM as expected. After putting the ram in and powering on I get a bios beep sequence 2-3-2 with increasing pitch, but no warning LED or wrench LED

Edit: replaced the stock GPU with a new one, everything booted up all the way into OS... Not sure what happened here, I read that maybe the issue might be running Windows 10 (so UEFI BIOS) with an old video card (NVS315) as I read here: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkStation-Workstations/P900-starts-with-beeps-2-long-3-short/m-p/3371650?page=1#3372624

For the front ports, when you see the warning LED light on the front panel and the one USB LED start to blink (particularly the USB port with the wrench icon), it's indicating the system has entered diagnostic mode.  You can find more about how that works here:

https://www.thinkworkstationsoftware.com/?view=diags

Basically that port is trying to output a diagnostic log file that will help point to whatever might have been going on.  You can typically dump that data to a USB key, or use the appropriate Lenovo Diagnostics mobile app.

The 2-3-2 beep code sequence you mentioned typically points to an OPROM problem (actually it's a code for no OPROM found + a code for a CMOS error, due to no video in this case).  Sounds like you were on the right path in focusing on video as the problem.  What was your original stock GPU?

Stock GPU was NVS315 which only has DMS-59 output for which I don't cables so couldn't have checked any output to screen even if it got past the issues. Swapped it out for a GTX 1080 and everything finally seems to be working.

When the PC was in diagnostic mode I couldn't get any log files by putting a FAT32 usb key in the "wrench" USB slot, any idea why? Also for future, what mobile apps are appropriate to use? I came across this one but it seems it only deals with recognising audio sequences whilst in the diagnostic mode there were no beeps.

I'm not sure why the USB file dump option wasn't working in that particular case.  I do remember from back when this platform was shipping that there were some USB keys that didn't place nicely with the diagnostic system, so maybe that's what was happening here.

The diagnostics app that uses the audio sequencing only works on certain PX20 platforms (ones that include the proper light sensor in the front panel).  For P700, you'd have to use the older diagnostic app that was supported on certain PX00 and PX10 platforms.  Link below (hopefully it's still valid):

Thanks for the detailed answers and the heads-up about the older app, I will check it out.
