My E31 is quite noisy

2013-01-18, 6:30 AM

Just received my E31 (SFF). Everything looks good except the noise.

Acoustic performance is not as good as E31's website claims (noise level <30db). I downloaded a few sound meter free apps for my smart phone and found noise level of E31 is more than 50db (I did the test in mid night so my room is very quite and very little noise outside).

My home ThinkPad T500 is considerably quiter than E31. My office's Dell Optiplex can also beat E31 in noise level.

CPU temperature, fan speed, etc all looks good. CPU is a low end CPU so it should be okay.

Is it normal?

unless you're using a calibrated sound meter (typically ~$500+) and measuring at the same distance, location, and environment as a manufacturer would, result from a free app on a smart phone wouldn't be valid.

with that said, can you be specific about what component you're considering noisy?   is it a hard drive, system fan, or graphics card?   if a system fan, is it on the CPU heatsink or a chassis fan?   what is the ambient environment temperature?   which model dell optiplex are you using for comparison?

whether your system is normal or not depends entirely on a lot of variables.   more information is needed here.
