New D Series?

2010-06-08, 21:08 PM

Does anyone know if Lenovo plans on releasing a new D series any time soon? My D10 is so messed up IBM just submitted a Windchill case against it and I wasn't sure if I should just buy a D20 or wait for a new model.

What's your definition of soon? :)

Intel's next workstation chipset isn't due out for about another year or so,  so that would be a good indicator of when to expect the next set of completely new platforms.

I was hoping for within a month or two but I have no issue with going with a D20 for the time being. Seems like there is a new ThinkPad every other week.

Thinkpad product line up is expanding, but the Thinkstation is not (well E series was added)... there is the Thinkcentre to appease a wider audience. There is no point in updating the Thinkstation with minor upgrades, given how much it costs to procure one of the D20 with a respectable configuration.

I'm not complaining about the ThinkStation, ThinkCentre's legacy goes back to the orginal IBM PC of the 80s and the Thinkpad's have been around since 1992. They've had the benefit of many years of development. Seeing as the ThinkStations were only introduced in mid 2008 it is still a very young product line. I think it also has to do with the fact that the ThinkStations are meant to be a replacement for IntelliStations which were also very expensive.

Lenovo update schedule for the Thinkstation is very much similar to the competitor's workstation update schedule. Short lifecycle for Thinkstation is probably not profitable to Lenovo, since the consumer demographic for this type of machine is lot more restricted than that of the Thinkcentre. And most company would not update their product line unless there is a healthy R.O.I.

ThinkStations D20 and S20 has been updated in last 1-2 months with new CPUs (Westmere) and currently available with up to E5680 and similar CPUs. What else you need?

One think I would like to have is USB 3.0 but that's something you can sort out by add-on PCI card.

Not sure what you would need. D20 is sort of perfect machine. I have one :-)

What I was hoping for is to see better NICs and RAID. Frankly, Broadcom is terrible and I've had nothing but bad luck with them. The Intel PRO/1000s in my D10 are awesome, I was even able to configure them for load balancing. I'm not sure how Lenovo ever came up with using a Marvell RAID HBA. The only 2 things I've heard about Marvell is either a negative comment or "who's that?".

Don't get my wrong, I love my D10 when it's actually working.

admittedly, i sold my D20 and kept my D10 because i preferred the LSI controller over the Marvell.   but, at the end of the day they're both "fake" RAID controllers and don't compare to a proper RAID-on-chip add-on card.

i also agree that the Intel PRO/1000s are excellent.

so, let me ask this.   what would you like to potentially see in the next generation of dual-socket ThinkStation model?   what's important to you in terms of RAID, PCI/PCI-e sockets, HDD/ODD drive bays, and ports?
