Re: New D Series?

Since we are talking about slots, they should all be mechanical x16 PCIe, then electrically they can be whatever they need to be. This provides the most flexibility for all configurations.

Re: New D Series?

I'd see that as being too confusing. Why not just have every slot be electrically x16?

One item I do not like are the special brackets you have to use for drives. Lenovo only ships what's needed for the drives ordered and no extras. It'd be nice if additional brackets were clipped to the inside of the case so you can add a DVD or floppy drive whenever you wanted without having to order parts from Lenovo. Dell ships extra brackets in all of their machines for free. It'd also be nice if there was a place to store PCI card slot covers. Just a cheap plastic clip on the case door would work.

if you look on the back of your 3.5" and 5.25" bay covers, you should find the brackets necessary to install optical and floppy drives.   the bracket fits on the left side of the drive (looking at it from the front) in the holes normally used for screws.   three are shipped with the 5.25" bays and one with the 3.5" bay no matter how you order the system since they're either on the backs of the covers or in use with drives.   i can't imagine why you'd need extras.

here is a photo of where you'll find extra brackets:

(note: mine only has one left because three are in use)

here's the bracket in use:

Re: New D Series?

I can't believe that.....Somebody might want to inform the Atlanta call center about that, they had me pay for additional brackets.

Re: New D Series?

i can't, either.   the atlanta support team should know that the brackets are on the back as this has been standard practice since the ThinkCentre first went tool-free in design.   heck, the only way i know of to get these brackets for a ThinkStation is to order an entire front cover.   the parts aren't available separately.

anyway, i fixed the photos on page two and in my post above.   something isn't working correctly with our image uploader on the forum.   we'll need to look into that.

No current chipset design can support more than 32 lanes. Only way to have more than 2 PCIe x16 slots electrically and mechanically is to add an NF200 chipset.

Re: New D Series?

I don't agree with that. With the Intel 5500 chipset you can do a dual chipset solution for up to 72 lanes. Tyan is already shipping a motherboard with such a setup. That board may actually meet all of the requests we've been talking about, more slots, Intel NICs, support for 5600 CPUs.

Re: New D Series?

this EVGA board has one processor socket yet an X58/ICH10R chipset, 4-way SLI, and 7 total PCIe 2.0 x16 slots Smiley Surprised: http://www.evga.com/products/moreinfo.asp?pn=170-BL-E762-A1

math isn't my strong point but that's probably more than 32 lanes. Smiley Wink

the challenge would be in fitting all of those slots plus dual sockets and memory banks just as psuturtle said.

Re: New D Series?

If my information is correct, the D10 mainboard is nothing but a Tyan with Lenovo branding. Why not just drop in that new Tyan with Lenovo branding? I don't think it would take long at all to throw in the Lenovo BIOS, beef it up with a few more USB ports.

Re: New D Series?

the system planars in ThinkStations are designed and laid out by Lenovo engineers and made under contract for Lenovo specifically and no one else.   they are manufactured by a company who specializes in this stuff and does not make motherboards for retail sale.   it is not Tyan by a long shot.

so, i have to ask... where did you get your information?
