Older Quadro Graphics in Thinkstation P620?

2021-04-01, 0:29 AM

I am looking to buy a P620 for Architectural CAD work but am getting the run around from Lenovo sales... (sales have to go to tech support, tech support have to go to someone higher up in tech support, then back to sales who half answer my questions so I have to ask for clarification and off we go again... etc etc - been going on for a week and a half)

I already have a 2 years old NVidia Quadro M4000 graphics card which is certified by my CAD software manufacturer. All I am trying to confirm is whether this older card will work properly in a new P620? I believe it "should" work but of course, Lenovo will not confirm that it will, and they have no ability for me to bench test this prior to purchase. I have asked and they will NOT consider waiving any restocking fees if it doesn't work and I have to return it.

SO I thought I'd just check with the community here to see if anyone is running any legacy X16 PCIe 3.0 graphics cards without issues.

Hello, I was able to test this out and verify that the M4000 should function in a P620 system. Again, not supported so there has been no heavy load/stress testing validation. However, in the lab one of our older cards booted right up with no issues. This was tested on a Win 10 20H2, with Nvidia driver 452.56. The VBIOS version of the card I tested is 84.04.88.00.06.

I hope that helps and let me know if you have any questions.

The official answer will be "no", the M4000 is not supported on P620.  But that's mainly a matter of timing as we didn't go back to qualify older GPUs on such a new platform.  As long as the card supports a UEFI OPROM (or hybrid UEFI/legacy), it should function OK.  Certainly no concerns with power, and I believe mechanical fit won't be a problem either.

As we should still have those GPUs on hand, we can certainly run a quick check for you to see if that card gives us any obvious problems.  It won't be a full statement of support or anything, but it should give you a little piece of mind before purchasing.  It might take some time for us to arrange this as we're still working from home with limited access to our lab and hardware.

And just for reference, the M4000 was actually released upwards of 5-6 years ago and is 4 generations old in terms of Nvidia architectures (Maxwell --> Pascal --> Volta --> Turing -->  Ampere).  This is likely the reason sales/support was having such a hard time getting an answer for you.

Thanks for your response psuturtle. You've communicated more in this single reply than a week and a half of email ping pong with my sales rep.

Yes, it would be reassuring to know that someone has actually proven the card to work. I know it is older (it was already end-of-life when I bought it new) but I would like to avoid having to drop a further $1500 on a new 8GB card when the old one is just fine, particularly now since there is hardly anything in stock hereabouts. Besides, my next upgrade would probably be to a Quadro RTX5000 anyway.

Brilliant, thankyou for checking this.

I have a slightly newer driver (452.57) and slightly older VBIOS (84.04.70.00.07), but should be all good. I was generally 99% sure it would work but you just never know if your specific card might have a specific issue with a specific motherboard because... I don't know... computers.

Thanks again.

Re:Older Quadro Graphics in Thinkstation P620?

I thought it best to keep posting in this thread since I have a follow up query...

My older Quadro M4000 graphics card does indeed work fine in my new P620. However, now that we are starting to see new graphics cards actually in stock at suppliers, I am looking to now upgrade to a more suitable workstation card. The 16GB Nvidia RTX A4000 is now showing as "in stock" at several retailers. I notice that the A5000 is listed as an available OEM item for purchase through the US Lenovo website. Is there any plan for it or the A4000 to be made available to us here in Australia?

I believe we're in the process of finishing up qualification of the A4000 on P620, so I would expect to start to see that card made available for new builds soon.  I can't really comment specifically as to when that would hit Australia for availability.  But at a worldwide level, that card is certainly coming down the pipe for P620.
