P320 SFF: PCI-e lanes and slots: can all twenty-one lanes run simultaneously?

2017-09-28, 22:28 PM

Good day,

I'm eyeballing the ThinkStation P320 SFF, and I have a question about its PCI-e slots and lanes.

I can see from this P320 SFF PDF that there are four slots, backed by a total of twenty-one PCI-Express 3.0 lanes.

Is it possible to occupy all four of these slots, and have all twenty-four lanes running at the same time?

If it's not possible to have all twenty-one PCI-Express 3.0 lanes running at the same time, how can I determine what combinations are possible?

Thanks very much!

Robroy

There are 4 slots total on P320:

- Slot 1 = PCIe x16 (gen3)

- Slot 2 = PCIe x1 (gen3)

- Slot 3 = PCIe x4 electrical (x16 mechanical slot, gen3)

- Slot 4 = PCIe x1 (gen3)

That totals 22 lanes.  Yes it's certainly possible to occupy all slots and have all the lanes running concurrently.  They are a point to point connection back to the CPU.

PSUTurtle, thanks very much for replying!

Thanks for the answer (that all slots can be fully occupied and run at once, with their full lane counts).

Thanks also for correcting my addition :). Yeah, sixteen plus six is twenty-two haha.

I appreciate your reply (and that this forum exists).

I was doing the same investigating (and the configuration may indeed be different in your country) but when I was configuring my P320SFF the highest CPU available was the XEON E3-1270v6.  Please correct me if I am wrong, but in the specs for that particular CPU it states that the Max # of PCI Express Lanes is 16.

Is this correct or am I overlooking an important factor here?  Thanks!

No that's correct.  16 lanes out of the CPU (for Kaby Lake)...anything else routed on the board would come from the chipset.  Sorry if I caused confusion there.
